With Kent Desormeaux riding for trainer Jim Cassidy, Evening Jewel took control of the 1 1/16-mile Ashland after breaking from the outside post in a field of eight 3-year-old fillies, then suddenly spurted away from her closest pursuer, Protesting, to open a big lead that proved insurmountable.

Thank U Philippe impresses in Florida Cup

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Thank U Philippe closed fast outside to get up in the final strides and win the Sophomore Sprint at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday. The race was one of six $85,000 stakes for Florida-breds on Florida Cup Day.

Thank U Philippe defeated My Charming Clyde by a neck in the seven-furlong race. Good Lord finished another half-length back in thrid Thank U Philippe paid $3.80 and set a stakes record time of 1:22.37.

The stewards conducted an inquiry on the start of the race that involved Thank U Philippe, but made no change in the order of finish.

Compari, Ventana win at Santa Anita

Compari wins the Grade 2 Arcadia at Santa Anita after controlling the pace on the front end.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Compari used his front-running style to win Saturday's $150,000 at Santa Anita.

Leading throughout the Grade 2 race over a mile on turf, Compari won his sixth consecutive race, and first at the graded level, prevailing by a half-length over Fluke. Battle of Hastings finished third in the field of seven, but did not have the best of trips, racing on the rail for the last half-mile and losing by just three-quarters of a length.

The first three finishers were all 2-1, but Compari was a slight favorite.

Warrior's Reward noses out Musket Man in Carter

OZONE PARK, N.Y - Trainer Ian Wilkes's faith in Warrior's Reward proved justified Saturday as the former underachiever became a Grade 1 winner with a stirring nose victory over Musket Man in the $250,000 at Aqueduct. It was 4 1/2 lengths back to Munnings, the 6-5 favorite, in third.

It was the first stakes win of any sort for Warrior's Reward, who had lost his previous six stakes starts, including a fifth-place finish in last year's Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga. That race was run at 1 1/4 miles.

All Giving regains form in Primonetta

In hindsight, trainer Flint Stites admits he may have asked his female sprinter All Giving to do a little too much in last fall's Maryland Million Distaff Handicap. Although she won that seven-furlong race for her third stakes victory of the season, the effort took its toll, as her form tailed off.

Based on how she performed in Saturday's $70,000 Primonetta Stakes at Laurel Park, All Giving is now as good as ever.

Derby next race for Homeboykris

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Rick Dutrow confirmed Saturday that he still plans to train Homeboykris into the Kentucky Derby instead of getting another prep into the colt.

The 2009 Champagne winner, Homeboykris has not started since finishing second behind stablemate Radiohead in a one-mile allowance race here on Feb. 27. Homeboykris finished fifth in his only other start at 3, the one-mile Holy Bull here.

"I just didn't think another race was necessary," said Dutrow.

Rail Trip nears comeback

Rail Trip is being pointed for a defenseof his Hollywood Gold Cup title.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Rail Trip, the winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup last July, is nearing a comeback at the upcoming Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting, and trainer Ron Ellis is raving about his condition.

Unraced since finishing third in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar last September, Rail Trip has been working steadily at Hollywood Park and is being pointed for the $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap over 1 1/16 miles on May 8. Ellis hopes to use the race as a prep for the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 10. Rail Trip won the in the best performance of his career.

Noble's Promise sharp for Ark. Derby

Noble's Promise is the expected favorite for Saturday's $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Trainer Ken McPeek wanted a sharp work from Noble's Promise in his final prep for the Arkansas Derby and he got his wish on Saturday morning, when the horse breezed five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.80 at Oaklawn.

"It's ideal," McPeek said of the work. "It sets us up for the race."
