Ice Mist tough to beat in Arlington allowance

Bernie Flint likes to say that he is “on the other side” of his career, which certainly doesn’t mean the 70-year-old New Orleans native is tapped out of training feats. While relieved that the monumental difficulties facing the racing industry nowadays are going to be someone else’s problems before too long, Flint is still plugging away, winning races at a 20 percent rate in 2010 while savoring whatever remaining time he chooses to keep himself in the game.

La Rocca the speed in Ontario Matron

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – La Rocca should be tough as the lone front-runner in Sunday’s $150,000 Ontario Matron Stakes at Woodbine, assuming that Grade 1 winner Hooh Why doesn’t ship in for the 1 1/16-mile route for fillies and mares.

La Rocca captured the 2009 B.C. Oaks at Hastings for trainer Terry Jordan. She wound up third in all three of her starts this year, which were all here on Polytrack.

The 6 1/2-furlong sprint for fillies and mares running for a $20,000 claiming price drew five horses and goes as race 5.

Distance an issue in Coaching Club American Oaks

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. − Richard Dutrow Jr. and Todd Pletcher have no qualms with the New York Racing Association’s decision to move the $250,000 Coaching Club American Oaks from Belmont Park to Saratoga. But both trainers, at least this year, would have been quite content if NYRA had left the distance at 1 1/4 miles.
