Devil May Care gets final work for Alabama

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Devil May Care, the East Coast’s leading 3-year-old filly, finished her preparations for her showdown with the West Coast’s Blind Luck in next Saturday’s Grade 1 Alabama by working four furlongs in 48.34 seconds Sunday morning over Saratoga’s main track.

Working in company with the Grade 3-winning colt Colizeo, Devil May Care, went in fractions of 12.80 seconds, a half-mile in 24.65, and came home in 23.69.

Retired jockey Stevens hurt in training accident

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Retired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens suffered a fractured left collarbone as a result of an accident during training hours Sunday morning at Saratoga.

Stevens, 47, was scheduled to participate in a parimutuel race next Friday at Arlington Park, pitting five retired jockeys against five current riders at Arlington’s meet. Stevens will have to cancel that engagement.

Longshot Shesagrumptoo draws clear in Sadie Hawkins

Shesagrumptoo upset a field of seven West Virginia-registered-and-accredited fillies and mares in the $50,000 Sadie Hawkins on Saturday evening at Charles Town.

Jockey Oliver Castillo kept the 7-year-old mare just off the early pace in the seven-furlong race and asked Shesagrumptoo for run in upper stretch. She responded, drawing clear late to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Pacesetting Here Comes Oonga settled for second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of Saxet Heights in third.

Sugardazzle upsets Amadevil at Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. - Sugardazzle got his biggest career win as the longest price on the board in a short field of four older Nebraska-breds as he claimed the $15,450 Amadevil Stakes by a length at Columbus on Saturday night.

Ridden by Jordan Olesiak, Sugardazzle dueled through the opening half-mile with 1-5 favorite From The Ashes. He edged clear leaving the quarter pole to draw off and then held safe as Justabit Shawklit, with Armando Martinez up, made a late run to claim second. Sugardazzle covered the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:14.40.

Sugardazzle returned $17.60.

DEL MAR, Calif. - There is a two-day pick 6 carryover of $846,824 for Sunday's nine-race program, the highest pick six carryover of the current meeting.

An upset win by Sugarinthemorning ($16) in Saturday's 10th race clinched the massive carryover.

Sidney's Candy sets course record in La Jolla

DEL MAR, Calif. - Stakes wins are seldom as dramatic as Sidney’s Candy’s in Saturday’s $150,000 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar.

Sidney’s Candy dueled with Macias through a quick pace, the pair drawing off by as many as 16 lengths on the backstretch. When Macias tired on the final turn, Sidney’s Candy just kept going under jockey Joel Rosario. Sidney’s Candy led by 13 at the eighth pole and by 5 1/2 lengths at the wire, finishing 1 1/16 miles on turf in course record time of 1:39.52.

Not bad for a turf debut.

Vannacide wins again at Arapahoe

Vannacide, who has won at least one race at Arapahoe Park every year since 2003, picked up her second stakes of the meet Saturday when she got up by a neck in the $39,270 Spicy. It was her fourth win in the mile and a sixteenth race for fillies and mares bred in Colorado.

Vannacide ($5.60) raced in seventh early and put in a determined bid through the stretch to overtake favorite She’s Outrageous. She covered the distance on a fast track in 1:47.52. Russell Vicchrilli was aboard the winner for trainer Kenneth Gleason.
