Shadowbdancing, Jonesboro stars in pair of six-figure stakes


Shadowbdancing and Jonesboro, who have accounted for the last two runnings of the Grade 2 Cornhusker at Prairie Meadows, will start in separate six-figure stakes Saturday night at Remington Park.
The races, the $150,000 Governor’s Cup and the $200,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup, were drawn Wednesday. Each went with seven horses. The stakes kick off the 26-race, $3 million stakes schedule this meet at Remington.

Catlaunch tops loaded lineup for Honey Jay Stakes

In what shapes up as an extremely strong race, five of the 11 Ohio-breds in Friday’s $50,000 Honey Jay Stakes at Thistledown are either current or past statebred champions.
The rugged 9-year-old multiple stakes winner Catlaunch was the top Ohio handicap male last year and Ohio horse of the year in 2008. He has won 32 of 78 starts and $792,054. Catlaunch, trained by Ivan Vasquez, is a double stakes winner this year. He has won 17 of his 39 starts going the Honey Jay distance of six furlongs.

Runnning Brook Gal fitter for All American Derby trials

Runnning Brook Gal will begin her quest for an All American double on Friday, when she starts in one of seven trials for the Grade 1 All American Quarter Horse Derby at Ruidoso Downs.
She will be making her second start of the year in the fourth race. The trials will run from the third through ninth races on a program that begins at noon Mountain.

Gallant Son, Noosa Beach meet again in Longacres Mile

AUBURN, Wash. – Budding rivals as 2-year-olds in 2008, Gallant Son and Noosa Beach will meet again on a bigger stage Sunday at Emerald Downs in the 75th running of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile.

Gallant Son, now a leading turf miler in Southern California, drew the No. 8 post position in a full field of 12 when entries were drawn Wednesday afternoon. A five-time stakes winner – three times at Emerald, twice in California – Gallant Son was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite by Emerald Downs handicapper Rob Rao.

Lisa's Booby Trap will switch to turf for Riskaverse

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – It’s not often a trainer considers a surface change with a horse that’s won all four of her starts on dirt by a combined 42 3/4 lengths. But nothing about Lisa’s Booby Trap has actually been orthodox.

The rags to riches story of a horse nobody wanted trained by a nearly broke horse trainer added another chapter Wednesday when Lisa’s Booby Trap blazed three furlongs over the Oklahoma turf course in 35.27 seconds under jockey Kent Desormeaux.

Baze drops plans for early return to riding

DEL MAR, Calif. – After working a horse at Hollywood Park on Wednesday, jockey Tyler Baze has abandoned plans to resume riding at the current Del Mar meeting less than a month after suffering facial injuries in an accident at the starting gate on July 24.

According to Vic Stauffer, Baze’s agent, the jockey is scheduled to resume riding at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting, which starts Sept. 29. Baze had considered returning as early as next week, but has decided to continue his recovery and postpone his return.

I Want Revenge will face five in Iselin

OCEANPORT, N.J. – I Want Revenge faces five rivals Saturday in the second start of his comeback, the Grade 3, $300,000 Phillip H. Iselin Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Now 4 and in the care of trainer Rick Dutrow, I Want Revenge returned July 3 to run third in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. The Suburban was the culmination of a long road back. The morning-line favorite for the 2009 Kentucky Derby, I Want Revenge was scratched on the morning of the race with a leg injury. The subsequent surgery threatened to end his career.
