Penn National's Ohio casino plan would relocate tracks

Penn National Gaming Inc. will relocate its two Ohio racetracks, including Beulah Park, to cities in Ohio that are not already slated for casinos if the state government allows it to operate slot machines at the facilities, the company told the Ohio State Racing Commission on Thursday.

Oaklawn officials will try to resume racing Friday

The five inches of snow that fell in Hot Springs, Ark., on Wednesday forced Oaklawn Park to cancel its second straight morning of training Thursday, but track officials are attempting to resume racing Friday.

A rash of winter storms has forced Oaklawn to miss five consecutive race dates in the last week. The latest hit was Wednesday’s snowstorm, which led to the cancellation of Thursday’s card. In all, Oaklawn has lost seven of its first 17 race dates. Oaklawn has not raced since sunday, Jan. 30.

Unlike her six opponents in Saturday’s $75,000 Maryland Racing Media Stakes at Laurel Park, the 4-year-old filly Kit Kats Luck has proven she can handle 1 1/8 miles. What’s less clear, however, is whether she’s fit enough to go nine furlongs after turning in the worst performance of her 13-race career.

J P's Gusto is scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - J P’s Gusto arrived at his new base of Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., in the early evening hours Wednesday after a full day of travel from Southern California. One of the nation’s top 3-year-olds, he has been transferred from trainer David Hofmans to trainer Joe Petalino and is scheduled to run Feb. 21 in the Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn.

Author of book on Earl Sande to appear at Turf Paradise

Richard Maturi will be at Turf Paradise Feb. 18-20 to sign copies of his book "Triple Crown Winner: The Earl Sande Saga." Maturi has spent the past few years traveling to numerous racetracks in the U.S. and Canada to tell the story about Sande.
