Turf Paradise announcer belts one out for Doris Day

Turf Paradise track announcer Michael Chamberlain was feeling nostalgic Sunday. As the horses came down the stretch in race 5 at the Phoenix track, Chamberlain cleared his throat and brought home winner Que Sera Sera to the tune of the same name in honor of Doris Day’s 89th birthday. The song was Day’s calling card, one she made popular in the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

Dialed In surges from last to first to nail 68-1 Shackleford in Florida Derby

Dialed In, ridden by Julien Leparoux, barely reaches the wire ahead of extreme longshot Shackleton to win the Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - With a performance that moved his trainer Nick Zito to tears, Dialed In moved to the forefront of the Kentucky Derby picture when he rallied from last to a gritty head  victory over the 68-1 Shackleford in Sunday’s $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Soldat, the 3-2 favorite, finished a tiring fifth.

Santa Anita: Amazombie nails Captain Cherokee at wire of Potreo Grande

ARCADIA, Calif.- Grudgingly, Amazombie is gaining respect in California’s sprint division with each start this year.

A 5-year-old gelding, Amazombie won the Sunshine Millions Sprint for California-breds and Florida-breds at 11-1 in January, finished a game second in the Sensational Star Handicap in February, and won his first graded stakes on dirt in Sunday’s $150,000 Potrero Grande Stakes at Santa Anita.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.- All About Allie remained perfect in Arkansas-bred company on Sunday, when she won her third such stakes in the $50,000 Downthedustyroad at Oaklawn Park.

The race for fillies and mares was one of two Arkansas-bred stakes on the card, with The Mallard Man taking the $50,000 Arkansas Breeders.

Aqueduct: Midnight Visit connects as heavy favorite in Love Is Eternal

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Midnight Visit ($3.60), the lone entrant who had a first-level allowance win on her resume, rallied wide into the stretch under Mike Luzzi and finished determinedly to wear down pacesetter Those Lion Eyes for a half-length score in Sunday’s $60,000 Love Is Eternal overnight stakes at Aqueduct for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies.

Dialed In runs down 60-1 Shackleford in Florida Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Nick Zito and owner Robert LaPenta made it back-to-back victories in the Florida Derby when Dialed In, under Julien Leparoux, rallied from last to nip 60-1 pacesetter Shackleford by a short head. It was 6 3/4  lengths back To Honor and Serve in third.

He was followed in the order of finish by Flashpoint, Soldat, Arch Traveler, Stay Thirsty, and Bowman’s Causeway.

Zito and LaPenta won the Florida Derby last year with Ice Box, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby

Gulfstream: S.S. Stone rises from claiming ranks to win Skip Away

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - S.S. Stone began the Gulfstream meet a low-level claiming horse. He ended it a graded stakes winner.

S.S. Stone won his fourth consecutive race of the meet when he persevered past Colizeo in upper stretch and then held off Jackson Bend to take the Grade 3, $100,000 Skip Away Stakes by two lengths at Gulfstream Park. It was one-length back to Colizeo in third. Drosselmeyer, last year’s Belmont Stakes winner, finished fifth, beaten seven lengths.

Little Mike takes third graded stakes of Gulfstream meet in Appleton

Little Mike could be headed to the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs after winning Sunday's Appleton.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla - Little Mike ran them off their feet again Sunday at Gulfstream Park, leading throughout to add the Grade 3 Appleton to his previous victories here this season in the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale and Canadian Turf stakes.

Mr. Commons tunes up for Santa Anita Derby

There was one workout from a Santa Anita Derby probable starter on Sunday with Mr. Commons working five furlongs in 1:00.60 for trainer John Shirreffs at Hollywood Park.

Mr. Commons will make his stakes debut in the Santa Anita Derby, having won a maiden race on turf on Jan. 15 and an allowance race over a mile on the main track on Feb. 26 in his last two starts.

Santa Anita: Misremembered goes slow and easy in Oaklawn Handicap tune-up

ARCADIA, Calif.- Not all of trainer Bob Baffert’s horses work fast.

Sunday at Santa Anita, Misremembered, one of Baffert’s leading older horses, worked five furlongs in 1:02.80, his final workout before the $350,000 Oaklawn Handicap in Arkansas next Saturday.

“I wanted him to go a little quicker,” Baffert said. “He’s ready for the race. The way he worked the other day, he was pretty impressive.”

On March 29 at Santa Anita, Misremembered worked six furlongs in 1:09.60.
