MIAMI – Luis Saez has dominated the standings here since the beginning of the meet and was the Superman of the local jockey colony throughout the spring. But no matter what superpowers trainers or horseplayers believe Saez may possess, there’s one thing he still cannot do – ride two horses at the same time. All of which becomes a moot point, considering Saez is named on both favorites, Motovato and Mambo Meister, for Saturday’s $55,000 Mecke Stakes at Calder.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Hollywood Park is raising overnight purses 10 percent effective June 30 for the final three weeks of the spring-summer meeting, the track’s president, Jack Liebau, said Thursday.

The meeting runs through July 17, and the purse increase will be in effect for the final 13 days of racing.

The track has underpaid overnight purses since the meeting began on April 21 because of cautious business estimates earlier this year, Liebau said.

ALTOONA, Iowa – The two-day Iowa Festival of Racing comes to a close Saturday night with an ultra-competitive renewal of the Grade  3, $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap. Contested over a mile and one-eighth, the Cornhusker drew a field of 11 veterans and is headed by West Point Thoroughbreds Awesome Gem, a winner of $2,508,270 in his 43-race career.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Fifty Proof will go back to the grass in Saturday’s $250,000 King Edward Stakes at Woodbine, following an encouraging Polytrack victory.

Fifty Proof was campaigned as a turf specialist last year, finishing second in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf and fifth in the Grade 1 Canadian International.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Artisanal puts a three-race winning streak on the line in her first graded test Saturday, the Grade 3, $150,000 Boiling Springs Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at Monmouth Park.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario − David Bell has been represented as a trainer in eight Queen’s Plates, including the 1997 running, in which Love View gave him his best result, finishing fifth.

But Bell will be participating in the Queen’s Plate in a new guise Sunday, when he sends Ojibway Signal, whom he trains and also owns in partnership with Gus Vlahos.

The versatile Golddigger’s Boy, who has put together a four-race winning streak while racing at distances between 6 1/2 furlongs and 1 1/16 miles, shortens up and comes back relatively quickly for Saturday’s $75,000 Donald LeVine Memorial Handicap at Parx Racing.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Plum Pretty is is a standout in Saturday’s $150,000 Hollywood Oaks field, but she will need to be at her best against two other fillies who have won or placed in Grade 1 stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A pair of $100,000 overnight stakes, the Trillium and the Charlie Barley, will be part of the supporting cast on Saturday’s Woodbine program.

The Trillium, a 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares, was added to fill a gap left for the division when the Hill ‘n’ Dale Stakes was dropped this year.

The response has been encouraging. Even though it only has a field of six, the Trillium attracted the talented local performers Mekong Melody and Milwaukee Appeal and shippers Upperline and Maristar.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Ralph Biamonte has won a Woodbine stakes on each of the past two Saturdays, and will try to keep the roll going this Saturday with Rose and Shine in the $150,000 My Dear, a five-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies.

Rose and Shine rallied wide from fifth under Patrick Husbands to land her $40,000 debut over Quit Worrying on May 27. She was awarded a Beyer Speed Figure of 60 for covering 4 1/2 furlongs in 52.11 seconds.
