But the third time was the charm for Never Retreat on Sunday as she reported home 1 1/4 lengths the best in the Dance Smartly, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares that offered Grade 2 status and a purse of $301,400.

Teapartysuccess, a former claiming horse who began her career in California, became a stakes winner in Colorado on Sunday, when she edged Sweet Dixie Van by a neck in the $40,000 George Wafer Memorial for 3-year-old fillies at Arapahoe Park. It was another 4 1/4 lengths back in third to Nena’s Niner.
Teapartysuccess ($24.60) trailed early as Perfect Finesse led the field through fractions of 22.68 45.15 seconds. Teapartysuccess advanced on the turn and closed fast to catch leader Sweet Dixie Van. The winner covered the distance on a track rated fast in 1:24.74.
Crown of Thorns, the winner of the Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap in May, but only seventh after a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs last month, may miss the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 30 because of an abscess in a foot, trainer Richard Mandella said.
Crown of Thorns was diagnosed with the setback after the Foster.
“I’m not sure we’ll make it,” Mandella said.
INGLEWOOD, Calif.- Acclamation may attempt to win his third graded stakes on turf at the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting in next Sunday’s $100,000 Sunset Handicap over 1 1/2 miles. Or, Acclamation may skip the race in favor of the $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes over 1 1/-8 miles on turf at Del Mar on July 23.

PLEASANTON, Calif. – Excessive Passion won the drag race down the backstretch, building an insurmountable lead as he won the $63,000 Sam J. Whiting Memorial Handicap at the Alameda County Fair on Sunday.
Excessive Passion ($7.60) and Goggles McCoy both wanted the lead and engaged in a sizzling duel at the start of the six-furlong stakes.
OCEANPORT, N.J. - Maple Forest took the lead turning for home and edged clear to a 1 1/4-length win over Moonlit Malibu in Sunday’s $75,000 Dearly Precious Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Monmouth Park.
