Woodbine: Team Block finds winner's circle with Never Retreat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Never Retreat had finished second in each of her first two trips to Woodbine, which came in last fall’s River Memories and the Nassau Stakes here June 4. But the third time was the charm for Never Retreat on Sunday as she reported home 1 1/4 lengths the best in the Dance Smartly, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares that offered Grade 2 status and a purse of $301,400.

Lone Star business strong ontrack

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Lone Star Park closed out its 52-date meet on Sunday with a 5 percent decline in all-sources average daily handle on its live races, but a 4 percent gain ontrack and a 10 percent jump in attendance. The track changed hands during the course of the season, which began April 14, with Global Gaming Solutions purchasing its operating assets from MI Developments in deal that closed May 16.

Hollywood Park: Jim Dandy, Haskell options for Coil

Coil, second as the 1-2 favorite in Saturday's Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park, may start in the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 30 or the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 31, trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday.

Neil Drysdale said on Sunday that he does not have an immediate goal for Dreamy Kid, who won his stakes debut in the Swaps Stakes in his sixth start. Robert Evans bred and owns Dreamy Kid.

Arapahoe Park: Former claimer Teapartysuccess takes George Wafer Memorial Stakes

Teapartysuccess, a former claiming horse who began her career in California, became a stakes winner in Colorado on Sunday, when she edged Sweet Dixie Van by a neck in the $40,000 George Wafer Memorial for 3-year-old  fillies at Arapahoe Park. It was another 4 1/4 lengths back in third to Nena’s Niner.

Teapartysuccess ($24.60) trailed early as Perfect Finesse led the field through fractions of 22.68 45.15 seconds. Teapartysuccess advanced on the turn and closed fast to catch leader Sweet Dixie Van. The winner covered the distance on a track rated fast in 1:24.74.

Del Mar: Foot abscess may keep Crown of Thorns out of San Diego Handicap

Crown of Thorns, the winner of the Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap in May, but only seventh after a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs last month, may miss the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 30 because of an abscess in a foot, trainer Richard Mandella said.

Crown of Thorns was diagnosed with the setback after the Foster.

 “I’m not sure we’ll make it,” Mandella said.
