DEL MAR, Calif.- Jockey Patrick Valenzuela climbed off the gelding Burns after a runner-up finish in the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar on July 20 frustrated after a wide trip. He knew then he wanted another chance.

Santa Rosa: Mr. Candy Bar wins three-way photo in Dupret Derby

Trainer O.J. Jauregui’s longstanding confidence in Mr. Candy Bar paid off Saturday when the 3-year-old colt rallied along the rail in the stretch to capture the $54,130 Robert Dupret Derby at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa.

Mr. Candy Bar ($18.80), a son of Candy Ride, was content to sit between horses while not contesting the pace early in the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds.

Arapahoe Park: Vanasee romps in Spicy Stakes

Vanasee drew out to a seven-length win over Angel of the Wind in the $43,270 Spicy Stakes at Arapahoe Park on Saturday, while her 10-year-old stablemate, Vannacide, finished fourth in what might have been the final start of her career.

"I would bet she is retired," trainer Kenneth Gleason said of Vannacide, adding that he is awaiting final word from the mare's owner, Bill Vanlandingham.

Saratoga: $134 winner in finale creates pick six carryover

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Thanks to trainer Frank Martin’s first victory at Saratoga in six years, there will be a pick six carryover of $76,567 heading into Sunday’s card.

The Martin-trained Ess Shape rallied down the outer portion of the main track to win Saturday’s nightcap, a $20,000 claimer, paying $134 in the process. Martin’s last winner at the Spa was Contender’s Emotion on Aug. 25, 2005.

Canterbury Park: Black Tie Benny uncatchable in Minnesota Derby

SHAKOPEE, Minn.  – Black Tie Benny established himself as top 3-year old colt or gelding in Minnesota on Saturday with a wire-to-wire win in the $60,000 Minnesota Derby.

Black Tie Benny went to the front under jockey Martin Escobar in the mile-and-70-yard race over a main track rated good.

“I was a bit concerned when I saw the 22,” said winning trainer Bernell Rhone.  “But Escobar gave a great ride and got him to settle nicely.”

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Stacelita got a perfect trip from just off the pace before going on to victory as the favorite Saturday in the 22nd running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Beverly D. at Arlington Park.

Giving owner Martin Schwartz his third victory in what long has been a crucial race in the filly-mare turf division, Stacelita bided her time and saved ground behind Dubawi Heights and Never Retreat before finding an inside gap and surging to victory.
