Saratoga: Coil's status for Travers unclear after work

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Bob Baffert said he didn't get a "wow factor" from talking to jockey Martin Garcia after the work.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Bob Baffert won the Haskell last year with Lookin At Lucky but chose to skip the Travers. Baffert won the Haskell again this year with Coil, and though he went as far as shipping that horse to Saratoga, the Hall of Fame trainer sounds as if he’s seriously considering skipping the Travers again.

Saratoga: Gitchee Goomie always right up there

Gitchee Goomie has been first or second in six starts against New York-breds.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In a competitive renewal of the $100,000 Yaddo Stakes Friday at Saratoga, Gitchee Goomie rates a slight edge based on her consistency, affinity for this turf course, and ability to handle less-than-firm ground.

Gitchee Goomie has 2 wins and 4 seconds from 6 starts against New York-bred competition. She owns a maiden win at Saratoga in September 2009 and has twice finished second here, including a one-half length loss to Chorus Music in the Irish Linnet Stakes on July 24. In fact, her four losses in statebred company have been by a combined 1 1/2 lengths.

Del Mar: Mizdirection finds better fit in Sandy Blue Handicap

Mizdirection (right) duels with Up In Time on her way to a second-place finish in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap over a mile of turf at Del Mar on July 24.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Mizdirection finished a game second in her first start around two turns in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on July 24, a result that has led trainer Mike Puype to take a realistic approach to her late summer campaign.

Saturday’s $250,000 Del Mar Oaks over 1 1/8 miles on turf is considered too steep. The $85,000 Sandy Blue Handicap over a mile on turf Friday, the same distance as the San Clemente, is considered a better fit.

“I know I wouldn’t look for more distance after the last race,” Puype said.

Arlington Park: DiVito juveniles continue to impress

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Since trainer Jim DiVito has won with a somewhat shocking 20 of his last 48 2-year-old starters, a 42 percent strike rate, it comes as little surprise that DiVito is coming off a grand weekend with the juvenile set. Twelve Hundred, an open-lengths winner at Prairie Meadows on Saturday, and Ann of the Dance, equally impressive Sunday at Arlington, both ran particularly well and earned slots in Arlington’s graded stakes races for 2-year-olds next month, the Arlington-Washington Futurity and Arlington-Washington Lassie.

Woodbine: Sinister Quill stretches for Eternal Search Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sinister Quill has been knocking on the door in stakes company here this spring.

On Saturday, Sinister Quill will be looking to break through as she stretches out to 1 1/16 miles and returns to the main track for the Eternal Search Stakes.

The Eternal Search, for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies, attracted a field of seven headed by Bear It’s Time, who won the $250,000 Bison City at the same distance.

“It’s going to be very tough,” said Danny Vella, who is the trainer and a part-owner of Sinister Quill.
