Woodbine: Ariana D finds softer spot in Belle Mahone

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Ariana D finished a strong second here at Woodbine last time out behind the streaking shipper Embur’s Song in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron at 1 1/16 miles. On Saturday, Ariana D returns at the same distance in the $100,000 Belle Mahone, an overnight stakes for fillies and mares.

“Certainly, this doesn’t look as foreboding,” said Laurie Silvera, who trains the Pennsylvania-bred 5-year-old Ariana D for her owner and breeder, Bill Thompson. “She’s in very good order and, all things considered, I think she’ll be tough to beat.’

Delaware: Robertson takes aim at Endine with pair of longshots

Although the Beyer par for the last 15 runnings of the Grade 3, $150,000 Endine Stakes is 100, none of the 10 fillies and mares in Saturday’s lineup for the six-furlong sprint at Delaware Park has ever hit that number. In fact, only four of the runners have ever come within six points of par and just one, locally based Eve Giselle, beaten as the 1-5 favorite in her most recent start, has posted her career best within the past six months.

Del Mar: Zenyatta's breeder has two must-see fillies

Shigeki Kikkawa
Owner Eric Kronfeld, who bred Zenyatta, was in attendance when Nereid (4) won her stakes debut – in a dead heat with Cambina – in the American Oaks last month. He plans to be at Del Mar on Saturday, when Nereid runs in the Del Mar Oaks.

DEL MAR, Calif. − People called, they cajoled, and they begged Eric Kronfeld to get on a plane from New York and travel to California, Arkansas, or Kentucky.

He would have none of it. No matter where Zenyatta ran or in what kind of race, Kronfeld refused to watch a filly whom he bred run in person. He missed her entire historic career, from late 2007 until last fall, and settled for watching it all on television.

“I’m a superstitious son of a gun,” he said.

Sanford winner Overdriven galloped Thursday but trainer Todd Pletcher canceled his scheduled workout.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - For the second time in nine days, trainer Todd Pletcher had to cancel a scheduled workout for his top 2-year-old Overdriven, casting doubt over the colt’s ability to be ready for the Grade 1 Hopeful here on Sept. 5.

Overdriven was scheduled to work four furlongs over Saratoga’s main track Thursday morning in company with Restitution. Pletcher didn’t like the way Overdriven was moving on the track and decided to have exercise rider Patti Krotenko gallop him about 1 1/2 miles.

Saratoga: Ortiz has tough day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It was a down day for apprentice jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. First he fell down, then he was taken down.

In the eighth race, Ortiz looked to be seriously injured when his mount, My Nan Nell, clipped heels with Money Magnet, unseating the 19-year-old jockey, who hit the ground hard and rolled head over heels three times. Ortiz lay on the ground for several minutes before being taken off the track on a stretcher.
