Saratoga: Spa Babies for Aug. 31, Race 8

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet and hope for a tidy profit.

In past years, I would list the stats for each horse before writing up my analysis, selections and wagering strategy. In order to streamline the content, this year's Spa Babies will showcase written analyses of each juvenile race. Each analysis will include relevant statistical information. Following the analysis, top three selections and wagering strategy will be provided.

Saratoga: Ask the Moon stays for rescheduled Personal Ensign

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - With the Grade 1 Personal Ensign postponed from last Sunday to Saturday because of Hurricane Irene, trainer Marty Wolfson did a little ad-libbing with Ask the Moon, who had shipped here from her Monmouth Park base last Saturday morning. Ask the Moon, a former claimer, returned quick dividends for owner Myron Miller’s Farnsworth Stables when she drew off to a convincing 5 3/4-length victory in the Grade 1 Ruffian here on July 31.

Saratoga: Friend Or Foe done for the year

Friend Or Foe, fourth in the Whitney, developed ankle trouble.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer John Kimmel said that Friend Or Foe, the fourth-place finisher in the Whitney Handicap, is done racing for the year because of an ankle issue that will likely require two months of inactivity.

Woodward: Havre de Grace gets a work in

Havre de Grace is scheduled to meet males in the Woodward.

After having had a scheduled Monday workout canceled because of track-related issues at Delaware Park, the Larry Jones-trained Havre de Grace was able to blow out three furlongs in 35.60 seconds at Delaware on Tuesday in preparation Saturday’s Woodward Stakes.

Saratoga: Dark Thunder in fine form

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Todd Pletcher has Dark Thunder primed for another big performance when he makes his stakes debut in the seven-furlong, $75,000 Island Whirl at Saratoga on Thursday. Dark Thunder has run through his allowance conditions in smart fashion, winning each of his last three starts, including a third-level, high-priced optional claiming race by a length despite a wide trip here on July 30.

Saratoga: Spinaway, Hopeful both possible for Judy the Beauty

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A lot of attention will be paid to Havre de Grace starting against the boys in Saturday’s Grade 1, $750,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. But she may not be the only female challenging males in Grade 1 stakes here this holiday weekend.

Wesley Ward said he plans to enter his undefeated 2-year-old filly Judy the Beauty in both Sunday’s Spinaway for fillies and Monday’s Hopeful for colts and geldings. Both Grade 1 races are run at seven furlongs. Ward, who owns and trains the filly, said he wanted to analyze both fields before deciding in which race to run.

Del Mar: Proctor eyeing a strong close to meet

Killer Graces is the only prospective starter for the Del Mar Debutante who is still not eligible for a first-condition allowance race.

DEL MAR, Calif. – This has been a productive summer for trainer Tom Proctor, who has made a lot of noise with the handful of horses he brought here. He has a chance to finish with a flourish, too, because Proctor will be represented by Emerald Gold in the Grade 1, $250,000 Del Mar Debutante on Saturday, and he plans to run both Banned and Lil Bit O’Fun in the Grade 2, $250,000 Del Mar Derby on Sunday.
