Northlands star Freedoms Traveller out for season

Canadian Derby winner Freedoms Traveller will take the rest of the year off to recover from a hairline fracture in his left front ankle, according to trainer Lianne Knechtel. Freedoms Traveller was being pointed to the $50,000 Beaufort Stakes Sept. 17, and he would have been a prohibitive favorite and the star of the seven stakes races restricted to Alberta-breds on Fall Classic Day.

Saratoga: Overdriven done for the year

Overdriven, winner of the Grade 3 Sanford, will not race again in 2011, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Overdriven, winner of the Grade 3 Sanford, will not race again this year due to bone re-modeling, according to trainer Todd Pletcher.

Pletcher had to cancel two workouts for Overdriven in August after he didn’t like how the colt warmed up. The horse was sent to New Bolton Clinic in Pennsylvania, but X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures.

Saratoga: Deluxe makes long-awaited U.S. debut

Deluxe will make her U.S. debut in Saturday’s $75,000 Paris Opera Stakes at Saratoga.

The royally bred Deluxe, who had her U.S.-debut postponed when she scratched from the De La Rose Stakes here Aug. 6, is now set to make her first start in more than 10 months in Saturday’s $75,000 Paris Opera Stakes going a mile over the inner turf.

Deluxe is a 4-year-old daughter of Storm Cat out of the mare Hasili, making her a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Banks Hill, Intercontinental, Champs Elysees, Cacique, and Heat Haze. Deluxe won 3 of 6 starts in France when trained by Andre Fabre.

Emerald Downs: Newcomer Kubinova gets first U.S. ride

AUBURN, Wash. – Apprentice jockey Elizka Kubinova will take the great leap Saturday when she rides in a race in the United States for the first time. She will be aboard Sassy Britches, a speedy 5-year-old mare trained by the father-and-son team of Dan and Ryan Kenney, in the fifth race at Emerald Downs, a $3,500 claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Saratoga: Brilliant Speed back to grass in Saranac

Brilliant Speed will return to the grass in Sunday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Saranac Stakes.

Brilliant Speed, the Blue Grass Stakes winner and third-place finisher in the Belmont Stakes, will return to the grass in Sunday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Saranac Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles over the inner turf course.

Del Mar: Heleonor Rugby may come back quickly

Heleonor Rugby had a busy summer at Del Mar, sweeping the two stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies – the CTBA Stakes on July 22 and Wednesday’s Generous Portion Stakes. In between, she finished third in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 5.

Trainer A.C. Avila said after the Generous Portion that Heleonor Rugby may make a relatively quick turnaround for the $100,000 Barretts Debutante Stakes at the Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Fairplex Park on Sept. 17. The county fair meeting begins next Friday.
