Mountaineer: Seruni, Grecian Maiden win holiday stakes

Seruni won the $75,000 Labor Day Stakes and Grecian Maiden took the $75,0000 Summer Finale at Mountaineer Race Track on Monday.

Seruni, ridden by Jon Court, won the mile and 70-yard Labor Day by 4 3/4 lengths over 9-10 favorite Cryptolight, with Sneakin Thru third in the field of seven older horses. Owned by G. Watts Humhrey Jr. and St George Racing Farm, Seruni paid $6 to win and covered the distance on a muddy, sealed track in 1:41.98.

Hastings: Taylor-Gutierrez team sweeps Churchill and Delta Colleen

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The combo of trainer Troy Taylor and jockey Mario Gutierrez swept both stakes at Hastings Monday.

Cherokee Notion ($8) was a game winner over longshot Silly Fella in the $50,000 Sir Winston Churchill for 3-year-olds and up. Dashing Daisy ($4.90) won a thriller in the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares.

City to City got a ground-saving trip under Garrett Gomez to edge Medaglia d'Amour in the Grade 2 Palomar Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. - It seemed to take forever for Jerry Hollendorfer to get that elusive 6,000th win, but he's making up for lost time in his quest for 7,000.

Hollendorfer won five races on Monday, four at Golden Gate Fields, and then a fifth at Del Mar when City to City captured the Grade 2, $150,000 Palomar Handicap for female turf horses.

Del Mar: Ruler of Dubai all the way in I'm Smokin

DEL MAR, Calif. - Ruler of Dubai grabbed the lead leaving the gate and never looked back when he led from start to finish in the $100,000 I'm Smokin Stakes for California-bred 2-year-olds on Monday at Del Mar.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Emerald Beech rallied past pacesetting Dynaslew inside the final furlong and drew clear to a 1 1/2-length victory in Monday's Grade 3, $102,000 Glens Falls Stakes on closing day at Saratoga.

Dynaslew held second by 7 1/2 lengths over Senada. She was followed in the order of finish by Dyani, Prize Catch, Ainamaa, Giants Play, Gold d'Oro and Zapparition.

Ben's Cat and rider Jeremy Rose stormed through the lane to edge Perfect Officer by a half-length in the Grade 3, $350,000 Turf Monster at five furlongs on Monday at Parx Racing.

The victory in the Turf Monster, a Breeders' Cup Challenge Win and You're In event, ensures Ben's Cat a fees-paid spot in the BC Turf Sprint in November at Churchill Downs.

It also gave the 5-year-old gelding a sweep of the state's top grass sprints. Ben's Cat won the Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Penn National in his previous start.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In the ultimate local-girl-makes-good story, trainer Terri Pompay, a Saratoga native, won her first Grade 1 stakes Monday when Currency Swap wore down pacesetting longshot Trinniberg in the final strides to win the $250,000 Hopeful Stakes for 2-year-olds by three-quarters of a length.

It was 3 3/4 lengths back to Big Blue Nation in third. He was followed in the order of finish by Laurie’s Rocket, Power World, I’ll Have Another, Hunt Crossing, Vexor, and Clip the Coupons.
