Less than 24 hours after winning his 6,000th career race, trainer Steve Asmussen picks up another big win with Sabercat in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot.

VINTON, La. - Trainer Steve Asmussen’s weekend to remember got even sweeter on Saturday, when Sabercat recovered from a troubled start to post a sweeping, four-length win in Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. Basmati finished second in what was one of the year’s richest races for 2-year-olds, while it was another 2 /2 lengths back in third to Longview Drive.

The Jackpot was the centerpiece of an eight-stakes program at Delta Downs. The races were worth a cumulative $2.1 million.

VINTON, La. - Delta Downs has been the site of some of Decisive Moment’s biggest career wins and the trend continued Saturday when he fought off Hoorayforhollywood and Matto Mondo for a neck win in the $125,000 Delta Mile.

The race was one of eight stakes on a card anchored by the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. Purses for the races totaled $2.1 million, making the program the richest of the year at Delta.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Taking command midway around the far turn just as the pacesetter pulled up, Redeemed pulled clear into the stretch to win Saturday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Discovery Handicap as much the best.

Breaking alertly beneath Edgar Prado, Redeemed ($4.90) quickly assumed striking position racing to the clubhouse turn just off early leader Ghost Gunner, while Raison d’Etat and Arthur’s Tale, the co-second choices at 3-1, were caught four and five wide, respectively.

Beulah: Bakers Haulover draws off in Ohio Freshman

GROVE CITY,  Ohio - Bakers Haulover dueled from the outside early in a nine-horse field before drawing off in upper stretch to win the $55,000 Ohio Freshman at Beulah Park on Saturday. Trained by Doug Cowans, the 2-year-old Ohio-accredited gelding held clear to win by four lengths under jockey Perry Ouzts over a fast track.

Uncle Virgil, part of a three-horse entry that was favored at 1-5, failed to respond for jockey Luis Martinez but still finished second, 5 1/4 lengths in front of stablemate I'm Kiddin, a filly.

Fair Grounds attracts 109 horses for opening-day program

Opening day of the 2011-2012 Fair Grounds meet doesn’t come till Thursday, but the fields for the card were set in the first draw of the season Saturday, the results of which look fairly encouraging.

A total of 109 horses were entered on a 10-race card, but many of those are also-eligibles in over-subscribed races. Three races went with just seven entries each, and the traditional opening day feature, the $75,000 Thanksgiving Handicap, drew eight entrants.
