Barbara D. Livingston
Hansen, winner of the Gotham Stakes, will make his next start in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

With his stature back intact, champion Hansen left Belmont Park on Monday morning on a van bound for Kentucky, but the winner of Saturday’s Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct is expected to return next month for the $1 million Wood Memorial to be run over Aqueduct’s main track on April 7.

Hansen, who spent the winter in south Florida, was scheduled to arrive Monday night at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. He will stay there until the end of the week, when he will relocate to Churchill Downs’ Trackside training facility, a few miles away from Churchill itself. Trackside opens Friday.

“Despite not winning, I couldn’t be much happier with the performance,” Von Hemel said Monday morning. “It’s a good way to get started for the year.”

First there was Mucho Macho Man, third in last year’s Derby, who opened his 4-year-old campaign with a convincing victory in the Sunshine Millions Classic.  That performance was flattered this weekend after Classic runner-up Ron the Greek captured the Santa Anita Handicap.

Tampa Bay Derby to have Pletcher standout

Tom Keyser
Spring Hill Farm, trained by Todd Pletcher, wins a mile allowance to bring his record to 2 for 2.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – In recent years Tampa Bay Derby has emerged as one of the more popular preps for 3-year-olds with Triple Crown aspirations. Since 2006 at least one Tampa Bay Derby starter has gone on to run in Kentucky Derby, and two of those runners, Street Sense and Super Saver, won the first leg of the Triple Crown. Musket Man finished third in 2009.

The Grade 2, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby will be run on Saturday, Festival Day, and as many as 10 are expected for the 1 1/16-mile race, according to the track’s stakes coordinator, Gerry Stanislawyzyk.

Mr Gruff, ridden by Joel Rosario, scores as the odds-on favorite in the Joe Hernandez.

ARCADIA, Calif.- A kinder pace scenario and a drop in class helped Mr Gruff win for the sixth time in eight career starts on Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in Sunday’s $79,880 Joe Hernandez Handicap.

Mr Gruff led throughout the race over about 6 1/2 furlongs. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Mr Gruff ($3.60) set fractions of 22.14 and 43.80 seconds, leading by a half-length on the hillside.
