Parx Racing: Familiar rivals start for new barns

After finishing noses apart six weeks ago, Winning Drive and Antenna will find out which one has improved the most since changing hands when the two geldings are rematched in Monday’s featured ninth race at Parx Racing.

The 6-year-old Winning Drive and 5-year-old Antenna are part of a seven-horse field in a second-level optional $25,000 claimer at six furlongs. They are the only members of the field entered for the optional $25,000 tag – the same price which their new connections paid on Feb. 5.

Sunland Park Derby to be drawn Wednesday

The field for the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby will be drawn on Wednesday. The mile and an eighth stakes will be run on Sunday, March 25, as part of a program of seven stakes worth a collective $1.6 million. Other top races on the richest card of the meet will include the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks that is expected to draw the undefeated Princess Arabella for trainer Bob Baffert.

Oaklawn Park: Caleb's Posse on his toes in half-mile drill

Caleb's Posse will return to Aqueduct for the Grade 1 Carter on April 7.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Caleb’s Posse began his preparations for next month’s Grade 1 Carter Handicap on Saturday morning, when he breezed a smart half-mile in 47.20 seconds at his Oaklawn Park base. The move was the second fastest of 45 at the distance, and his first since finishing second in his comeback earlier this month at Aqueduct in the Grade 3 Tom Fool.

Caleb’s Posse was beaten a neck by Calibrachoa in the Tom Fool. The $400,000 Carter will be run April 7 at Aqueduct.

Turfway: Maker pair among Spiral workers

Many of the prospects for the upcoming Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park had their final pre-race works in recent days, including a pair that breezed five furlongs for Mike Maker on Saturday morning at the Trackside training center in Louisville. Mr. Prankster went solo in 1:02.60, while Tizanexpense was timed in 58.80 seconds when working in company.

At the Palm Meadows training center in south Florida, Stealcase breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 Saturday morning for trainer Mark Casse, who also intends to run Bluedacious in the Spiral.

Keeneland: BC Mile runner-up Turallure sharp in six-furlong move

Turallure has not started since being beaten a nose in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Turallure had another serious work toward his seasonal debut when breezing six furlongs Saturday morning in 1:12.40 over the Polytrack surface at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Trainer Charlie Lopresti said he is extremely pleased with how Turallure has wintered and that the main goal for 2012 is a return to the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the $3 million race in which Turallure was beaten a nose last November at Churchill Downs by Court Vision.

“He worked really well,” said Lopresti. “I caught him going out [seven furlongs] in 1:26 and a tick. I’ve got him right where I want him.”

Gulfstream Park notes: Union Rags, Take Charge Indy breeze five furlongs

Union Rags worked an easy five furlongs Saturday. His next start will be the March 31 Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Union Rags breezed a leisurely five furlongs in 1:04.21 seconds shortly after sunrise Saturday morning at Palm Meadows as he continues preparations for the $1 million Florida Derby on March 31.

Union Rags was on the track at the same time as another Florida Derby hopeful, Take Charge Indy, who worked a quicker five-eighths in 1:01.88 from the half-mile to the mile pole for trainer Pat Byrne.

Alpha '60-40' for Wood Memorial, says McLaughlin

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is undecided on where his top 3-year-old, Alpha, will make his next start, but indicated Friday afternoon that he is now leaning slightly toward the $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 7. His other choice appears to be the Louisiana Derby six days earlier at Fair Grounds.

"I don't know, to be honest," McLaughlin said Friday afternoon by phone from Florida. "I'd say it's 60-40 New York."

Arienza will be bred to Tapit

Arienza will be bred to Tapit this year, trainer Dan Peitz said Friday.

Arienza, the daughter of Horse of the Year Azeri and the runner-up in last year’s Fantasy, is to be bred to Tapit, trainer Dan Peitz said Friday. She was recently retired.

Arienza last raced Jan. 26 and was fifth in an allowance at Oaklawn. She had breezed back twice following the race, both bullets, a half-mile in 47.40 seconds on Feb. 17 and five furlongs in 1:00 on Feb. 26.

“Out of the [five-eighths work], she physically just didn’t seem happy,” Peitz said.

Santa Anita Notes: Amazombie beats the rain with drill

Amazombie earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Sprint with his win in the Ancient Title Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Amazombie beat the rain and the sun early Friday at Santa Anita, where he worked five furlongs soon after 5  a.m., getting the distance in 59.60 seconds under Alex Bisono.

Trainer Bill Spawr timed Amazombie in 59 seconds, six furlongs galloping out in 1:12.

“He seems stronger than last year,” Spawr said.

The 2011 champion sprinter, Amazombie looked healthy and happy later Friday morning at the Spawr stable and is expected to improve when he makes the second start of his campaign.

McLaughlin wins 1,000th race in North America

Kiaran McLaughlin estimates he has won an additional 300 to 400 races in Dubai.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin earned his 1,000th North American career victory on Friday when Que Posse scored a 2 1/4-length victory in a $64,000 allowance feature at Aqueduct.

McLaughlin, a former assistant for trainer D. Wayne Lukas and jockey agent for Chris Antley, began training horses in Dubai in 1993 for the Maktoum family. From 1993-2003, he spent parts of the year in Dubai and part in New York. He was a three-time leading trainer in Dubai, where McLaughlin estimates he won between 300 and 400 races that are not counted in his North American total.
