Gary Miller, an Arizona horse owner who recently stepped down as president of the Arizona Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, submitted the top bid of $3.25 million for Yavapai Downs in Prescott, Ariz., at a bankruptcy auction on Tuesday, according to a report in the Prescott Daily Courier.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Holy Candy is in Saturday’s $750,000 Santa Anita Derby – for now.
Trainer John Sadler entered Holy Candy on Wednesday, but said a decision on whether the impressive maiden race winner will start will not be made until raceday. The other option is to wait for the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 14.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Nine days removed from having a heart attack, and fewer than 24 hours after arriving back in California from Dubai, trainer Bob Baffert strolled into Santa Anita on Wednesday morning, his humor still intact.
“Back to work,” he said. “I feel like a hundred bucks.”
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Still in search of his first victory since winning last year’s Preakness, Shackleford will cut back to seven furlongs in Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. This will be the shortest distance at which Shackleford has run since winning a maiden race at Churchill Downs in November 2010.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.– Paco Lopez will undergo surgery Thursday at Aventura Hospital in Hallandale Fla. to repair a displaced fracture of the left clavicle suffered in a spill in the final race at Gulfstream Park on March 17.
Lopez had originally been diagnosed with six broken ribs and a fractured collarbone that doctors said would take four to six weeks to heal without surgery. But after undergoing additional X-rays and conferring with two specialists earlier this week, Lopez was informed the fracture was displaced and required surgery.
Midwest Thoroughbreds, the nation’s leading owner in 2011, will lease two barns at Hawthorne Race Course this summer and use the track as a training center for about 100 horses.
Rich Papiese, who operates Midwest with his wife, Karen, said the Hawthorne string would include 30 to 40 2-year-olds who will be moved north from Midwest’s farm and training facility in Florida. The entire string will be overseen by Roger Brueggemann, one of several trainers – including Jamie Ness – employed by Midwest.
A rail draw for a major Quarter Horse race would spook some trainers. Juan Aleman considers Flame N Flash to be at an advantage from the inside post in Friday’s $214,300 La Primera Del Ano Derby at Los Alamitos.
Flame N Flash will be after her first major stakes win in the Grade 2 La Primera Del Ano Derby, which is run over 400 yards.
“I kind of like the 1 hole with her,” Aleman said. “She kind of drifts inward, and maybe it will keep her straight. I’m not too disappointed with that post position.”
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Horses who last raced at Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, and Will Rogers Downs have all landed at Oaklawn Park on Friday for the $75,000 Prima Donna.
The six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies drew a cast of nine that also includes such locals as Grade 3 winner Rocket Twentyone, the stakes-placed Lulu Wong, and razor-sharp debut winner Whobetterthanus.
