Santa Anita: Maiden winners face off on the hill

ARCADIA, Calif. – Darling Dodie ran a perfect race in her career debut against maiden California-breds on the hillside turf course on March 2, closing from off the pace to win by 4 1/4 lengths.

Unfortunately for owners Ran Jan Racing and trainer Mike Puype, the victory leaves the filly in the same situation as Starry Skies, a winner in her debut an hour before Darling Dodie.

Woodbine: Easter card has stakes-class runners

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The first Sunday of the Woodbine meet doesn’t have a stakes, but there are several stakes winners on the card, including Quick Code, who starts in the eighth race, six-furlong starter allowance for horses who competed for $40,000 or less in 2011-12.

Quick Code won 5 of 9 starts last year at 3, while banking more than $200,000 for trainer Mike DePaulo. The closer served notice that he was a decent prospect when he took his 5 1/2-furlong debut against $32,000 maidens last April convincingly, earning a 79 Beyer Speed Figure.

Gulfstream Park to run Quarter Horse race on Sunday

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park will run a 220-yard Quarter Horse race following the conclusion of the 11-race Thoroughbred card on Sunday, closing day of the 2011-2012 meeting. The reason for running the race is to keep the track’s Quarter Horse permit valid in case the Florida legislature decides to revoke any parimutuel permits that are not active, said Gulfstream Park president and general manager Tim Ritvo.

Woodbine: Williams back for another go-round

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Apprentice jockey Scott Williams was riding high atop the Northlands Park standings when his season came to an end because of injury last July 30. Now, Williams is taking a second run at Woodbine as part of an apprentice colony that at this early stage of the game can be said to lack a standout.

His problems had started in a race several weeks earlier when he was unseated and thrown to the track after being caught in tight quarters in the early going.

Gulfstream: Wait a While may not be ideal fit for Distorted Legacy's return

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Distorted Legacy, beaten just a length in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, will finally launch her 2012 campaign in Sunday’s $70,000 Wait a While, the feature race on closing day of the 2011-12 Gulfstream Park meeting.

The Wait a While is carded to be run at 1 1/16 miles on turf. The race drew a field of 10 fillies and mares, including the red-hot Race to Urga and Speak Easy Gal, both of whom will share high weight of 121 pounds under the allowance conditions of the overnight stakes.

Woodbine: Schickedanz has racing privileges restored

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Owner/breeder Bruno Schickedanz has had his racing privileges  restored at Woodbine and will be represented by Stuck in Traffic, trained by Phil England, in Sunday's first race.

"We talked and came to an agreement which reinstated his racing privileges," said Jamie Martin, executive vice president for racing of the Woodbine Entertainment Group.

Ruler On Ice has rejoined trainer Kelly Breen's barn following a break on an Ocala, Fla., farm.

As trainer Kelly Breen tries to get My Adonis to this year’s Triple Crown series in Saturday’s Wood Memorial, he welcomed Ruler On Ice, last year’s Belmont Stakes winner, back to the barn Thursday.

Ruler On Ice, who has not run since finishing eighth in the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream on Feb. 11, arrived at Belmont on Thursday from a farm in Ocala, Fla.

“He just went six weeks for some R and R,” Breen said. “He’ll have to start from scratch. He was a little banged up, sore all over, needed to recharge the batteries.”

Aqueduct: Arthur’s Tale nears return to racing

Arthur’s Tale, runner-up in the 2011 Wood Memorial, worked six furlongs in 1:14.63 on Thursday over Belmont’s training track and is nearing his 4-year-old debut, trainer Tom Albertrani said.

Arthur’s Tale was beaten a neck by Toby’s Corner in last year’s Wood Memorial, but came out of the race with a shin injury that knocked him out of the Triple Crown series.

He returned in the fall with a fourth-place finish in the Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing and the Discovery at Aqueduct.

I Want Revenge retired from racing

I Want Revenge has been retired from racing at the age of 6.

The star-crossed I Want Revenge, winner of the 2009 Wood Memorial, has been retired from racing, owner Michael Iavarone confirmed Thursday.

I Want Revenge suffered from a throat issue that compromised his breathing and led to him being scratched out of an overnight stakes at the gate at Aqueduct on March 11.

“He retired sound,” Iavarone said. “For whatever reason, he displaced. We could do a throat surgery on him, but we gave he gave him every chance. When he developed that problem, he’s probably telling us something’s not right.”
