Jockey Carlos Montalvo was taken by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital following the running of Saturday’s 11th race at Aqueduct in which his mount Bacchi fell.

A second horse, Rotten to the Core, died instantly after he fell over Bacchi and suffered head or neck trauma, according to New York Racing Association officials. Bacchi sustained a knee laceration, but otherwise was reported to be okay.

Ryan Curatolo, the jockey of Bacchi, appeared to escape the spill uninjured.

Jockey Mike Smith guides Lady of Shamrock to a win in the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes. The win was No. 4,999 for Smith.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Lady of Shamrock has finished the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting with a perfect record on turf.

On Saturday, the 3-year-old filly won her third consecutive turf stakes in the $150,000 Providencia Stakes over 1 1/8 miles. The only blemish on her record since arriving at trainer John Sadler’s barn last fall was a third in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes on dirt here in January.

Lady of Shamrock won the Blue Norther Stakes on turf in December and the China Doll Stakes on turf in March. Both races were over a mile.

Jackson Bend (right) holds off Caleb's Posse to win the Grade 1, $400,000 Carter Handicap by a nose.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Nick Zito’s fortunes changed in a matter of 40 minutes.

One race after watching his 3-year-old Casual Trick fail to finish the Wood Memorial, Zito let out a huge exhale after his gritty 5-year-old Jackson Bend held off the hard-charging Caleb’s Posse to win Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Carter Handicap by a nose at Aqueduct.

It was 1 1/2 lengths back to Shackleford, who was followed by Emcee and Tahitian Warrior. Calibrachoa was scratched in the morning due to a quarter crack.

Aqueduct: Trinniberg cruises to victory in Bay Shore Stakes

Tom Keyser
Trinniberg wins the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes by three lengths under Willie Martinez.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Allowed to coast along on an uncontested lead, just as in the Swale four weeks earlier, Trinniberg romped to an unchallenged victory in a slow-motion renewal of Saturday’s Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes.

Although Trinniberg’s opening half-mile of 47.41 seconds was hindered to some extent by a headwind, as was Broadway Alibi’s half in 47.25 wiring the Comely a race earlier, veteran rider Willie Martinez basically stole the race in broad daylight. Consider that New York-bred maidens went almost a full second faster to the half through the same wind earlier in the day.

Keeneland: Karlovy Vary outruns her odds to take Ashland

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Karlovy Vary wins the Ashland under jockey James Graham. Her next start will likely come in the Kentucky Oaks.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Trainer Rusty Arnold said before the Ashland Stakes was run for the 75th time Saturday at Keeneland that he believed Karlovy Vary was a better filly than It’s Tea Time, who barely missed winning the Grade 1 race two years ago. Such pronouncements often go awry, but this one sure didn’t, as Karlovy Vary led all the way under Jimmy Graham to win the Ashland by three-quarters of a length as a 15-1 length overlay.

“This was good,” said Arnold. “This one will work.”
