Tampa Bay Downs: Wide-open turf allowance tops card

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Anime, who sports a win and two seconds from her last three outings on the local turf course, tops an overflow field in Saturday’s feature race at Tampa Bay Downs. The first-level allowance will be run at a mile on turf and sports almost as many betting angles as it does participants.

Charles Town: Ex-claimer Brimstone Island back for shot at Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes

For the first six races of his career, Brimstone Island was strictly a claiming horse, running for a tag as low as $7,500 in January at Charles Town. Saturday night, Brimstone Island returns to the West Virginia bull ring, only this time he will be shooting for a $250,000 purse in a stakes.

Much improved since he was taken by owner-trainer William Campbell on Feb. 1, Brimstone Island will try to prove his recent placings in a pair of minor stakes in Maryland were no fluke in the seven-furlong Robert Hilton Memorial for 3-year-olds.

Hastings: Delay in adding Friday racing should help field size

Racing director Paul Ryneveld was pleased with entries for the first weekend of racing at Hastings. The 71-day meet opens Saturday with eight races. Post time for the first race is 1:50 p.m. Pacific.

“I thought we might get a few more horses in some of the categories but the types of races that went and the quality of racing for the weekend is a good way to kick off the season,” said Ryneveld.

Parx: Golddigger's Boy defends title in Lyman Handicap

Golddigger’s Boy and Ann’s Smart Dancer, both three-time stakes winners in 2011, headline a stakes doubleheader for Pennsylvania-breds on Saturday at Parx Racing.

The 5-year-old Golddigger’s Boy is one of six horses who combined to win 10 stakes last season in the Lyman Handicap (race 8). Ann’s Smart Dancer launches her 4-year-old campaign against eight other fillies and mares in the Foxy J. G. (race 7). Both stakes will be contested at seven furlongs and carry a purse of $75,000.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Mamma Kimbo will now be pointed for the Kentucky Oaks after she won her two-turn debut Wednesday in the Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy at Oaklawn Park. She led the field from the outset, scoring by 1 1/4 lengths over Amie's Dini. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Jemima's Pearl.
