Santa Anita adds sand, seeking slower, safer main track

ARCADIA, Calif. – Sand has been added to Santa Anita’s clay-and-sand main track in recent weeks, a procedure welcomed by some horsemen who say the racing surface is slower and safer than it was earlier this year.

The California Horse Racing Board has yet to release fatality statistics for this year’s meet, which began Dec. 26 and ends April 22, so it is not clear whether there have been fewer main-track casualties compared to last season. But some horsemen say adding sand has made the track safer.

Out of Bounds, Garrett Gomez up, wins the Sham before being sidelined by an injury that needed surgery.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Had things gone to plan, trainer Eoin Harty would be preparing Out of Bounds for next month’s Kentucky Derby.

But, as so often happens on the Triple Crown trail, Harty’s Derby dreams were dashed when Out of Bounds sustained a condylar fracture of his left foreleg on March 5, knocking him out of the spring and summer races.

“Believe me, that was a tough one to swallow,” Harty said Friday from Keeneland.

Santa Anita: Obviously, Contested could be a pair of winning favorites

ARCADIA, Calif. – The gelding Obviously and the filly Contested will be strongly favored and, of course, challenged by capable rivals in consecutive allowance races at Santa Anita on Sunday. Their trainers are confident the lightly raced horses can produce wins.

Obviously, a 4-year-old Irish-bred gelding trained by Mike Mitchell, makes his second start of the year, and second in the United States, in a second-level optional $62,500 claimer over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in the seventh race.
