Tampa Bay notes: Ness enjoying record-breaking meet

Tom Keyser
Trainer Jamie Ness holds a 10-win advantage over Gerald Bennett in the Tampa Bay Downs trainer standings.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – The meet at Tampa Bay Downs has three weeks to go and there’s little question the biggest news story has been the amazing success of the Midwest Thoroughbred horses trained by Jamie Ness.

Through 81 days of racing, Ness has sent out 71 winners from 155 starters, a figure that has already broken the record for races won at a meeting of 68, which Ness set during the 2007-2008 meeting. Horses trained by Ness have been winning at a blistering 46 percent clip, which has to rank among the best at any meet by a trainer with so many starters.

Santa Anita: Mizdirection may ship to New York for Just a Game

Benoit & Associates
Mike Puype says Mizdirection could travel to New York for the June 9 Just a Game on Belmont Park's turf course.

Mizdirection’s win in the Las Cienegas Handicap on the main track on Saturday will not result in a different focus for the 4-year-old filly’s career.

Trainer Mike Puype said on Sunday that Mizdirection will race mainly in turf stakes this year. He mentioned the $500,000 Just a Game Stakes over a mile on turf for fillies and mares at Belmont Park on June 9 as a possibility for her next start.

“She will be on the grass next time,” he said. “The Just a Game at Belmont would be under consideration.”

Aqueduct: Inherit the Gold outgames Isn't He Perfect in Action

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Inherit the Gold, ridden by Eddie Castrol, gets up by a head over Isn't He Perfect in the Action Stakes.

Entering Sunday’s $75,000 Action Stakes, trainer James Hooper described his New York-bred Inherit the Gold as “game.”

Most people who watched Sunday’s feature at Aqueduct would concur with that assessment after watching Inherit the Gold wear down Isn’t He Perfect - to whom he was spotting five pounds - to win the Action by a head. It was 2 1/2 lengths back to Tech Fall in third.

The win was the second in four starts this year and 10th in 24 career races for Inherit the Gold, a 6-year-old son of Gold Token owned by Susanne Hooper, Glas-Tipp Stable, and Ochre House Stable.
