2012 Kentucky Derby: Baffert wants to see how Liaison trains at Churchill

ARCADIA, Calif.- Liaison, the winner of the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park last December but winless in three starts this year, will be sent to Churchill Downs on Monday, moving closer to a potential start in the Kentucky Derby on May 5.

“I want to take him over there and train him on the track,” trainer Bob Baffert said at his stable on the Santa Anita backstretch.

“A lot of horses move up when they get out of here.”

Evangeline: Bleu Darling rallies strongly to capture Hallowed Dreams

Unleashing a furious rally down the lane, Bleu Darling ran down pacesetter Wire Me Bessie in the final strides to capture the $50,000 Hallowed Dreams Stakes on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs.

Izzie’s Gold altered course for room in midstretch and was along for third while Coteau Kitten reported home fourth.

Prairie Meadows: Alsvid dominates Golden Circle

Alsvid, after racing under stout restraint for three furlongs, surged up powerfully on the turn and swept past his rivals to take the $60,000 Golden Circle Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, by seven lengths Saturday night at Prairie Meadows.

Stopping the clock in 1:10.09, Alsvid, an Officer colt owned by James Rogers's Black Hawk Stable, needed only steady hand urging from jockey Terry Thompson, who was recording his fourth win on the first Saturday card of the season.

Santa Anita: Capital Plan collects first stakes win in Santa Barbara

Capital Plan, ridden by Brice Blanc, has thrived in long-distance grass races such as Saturday's Santa Barbara.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Distance racing on turf has developed into Capital Plan’s specialty since she joined trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s stable last summer.

Back in October, Capital Plan won her first start for Hollendorfer and co-owner Mark DeDomenico in an optional claimer over 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita. Four races and six months later, she returned to that course and distance in Saturday’s $150,000 Santa Barbara Handicap.

The outcome gave Capital Plan her first stakes win.

STICKNEY, Ill. – In Caleb’s Posse, trainer Donnie Von Hemel has one of the top one-turn horses in the country. Von Hemel also trains Alternation, who has three stakes wins this year, the most recent of which came in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap. So it’s not like Von Hemel is scouring the land for nationally relevant stakes horses. But he might have found another one on Saturday at Hawthorne, where She’s All In turned the Grade 3 Sixty Sails Handicap into a personal showcase, storming to an 8 3/4-length win  in the Grade 3, $200,000 race.

Santa Anita: Old-timer California Flag shows he's still plenty fast in San Simeon

ARCADIA, Calif.-The senior citizen of the California turf sprinters is the best California turf sprinter.

The 8-year-old gelding California Flag won his 2012 debut in Saturday’s $100,000 San Simeon Handicap over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, California Flag ($13.80) led throughout and won by a convincing 2 1/4 lengths over 26-1 Sayif. Compari, the 9-5 favorite, finished third in the field of seven.

 OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The Lumber Guy regained the luster he had lost in the Wood Memorial with an eye-catching 2 3/4-length victory over Brigand in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct.

 The Lumber Guy and Brigand - both New York-breds - dueled from the outset, with The Lumber Guy, under Mike Luzzi, edging away in the final furlong. Brigand was reported to have lost a right hind shoe in the race.

Keeneland: All Squared Away upsets Lexington Stakes to tune of $143.20

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Derby implications? Um, not this year. A 70-1 shot named All Squared Away was a stunning winner Saturday of the Grade 3, $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in a race that, unlike most prior years, will not yield a starter for the Kentucky Derby.

With Julio Garcia riding for trainer Wesley Ward, All Squared Away prevailed by 1 1/2 lengths over Summer Front, the 2-1 favorite in a field of 11 3-year-olds, with Hammers Terror a neck back in third.

Calder: Imperial Czar takes sloppy, off-the-turf Miami Mile

Imperial Czar drew in from the also-eligible list after the Miami Mile was switched from turf to dirt because of heavy rain, then benefitted from a good trip stalking a fast, contested pace, scoring a three-quarter length victory in the $100,000 race at Calder.

Pimlico: Idle Talk handles rise from $25,000 tag to upset Dahlia

Idle Talk ended her 2011 campaign by winning three straight races and after a four-month freshening the 6-year-old mare picked up right where she left off by running down  In the Rough in deep stretch to capture Saturday’s $75,000 Dahlia Stakes at Pimlico.

Trainer Mary Eppler showed confidence in Idle Talk, a daughter of Olmodavor owned by Patrick Kelley, by giving the mare the first stakes shot of her 30-race career after she had been running for the optional $25,000 claiming tag during her three-race winning streak at Laurel Park.
