Woodbine: Making Amends looks to rebound in Queenston

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse will be busy Saturday at Churchill Downs, where he saddles Prospective in the Kentucky Derby, but he will have an eye toward Woodbine when he runs Making Amends in the $150,000 Queenston Stakes. The seven-furlong event, which is a stepping-stone toward the June 24 Queen’s Plate, has lured seven other Ontario-bred 3-year-olds.

Making Amends is winless in seven starts since his closing debut score over Jenna’s Wabbit in the July 3 Clarendon Stakes. Following a winter break, he finished a wide second in the OBS Sprint Stakes in Ocala, Fla.

Pimlico: Scratched from Kentucky Derby, My Adonis favored in Canonero II

My Adonis, unable to make it into the main body of the field for the Kentucky Derby, will instead compete for a consolation prize as the favorite in Saturday’s Canonero II Stakes at Pimlico.

As an alternative to the 138th Derby, where he was an also-eligible and scratched Friday morning, My Adonis was coss-entered in the $75,000 Canonero II, a 1 1/16-mile race that drew five other 3-year-olds.

My Adonis stands out on class after twice finishing directly behind the juvenile champion Hansen in a pair of early season Grade 3 Derby preps, the Holy Bull and the Gotham.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Hansen dodges bullet at post-position draw

Hansen just missed drawing the disadvantageous rail post position on Wednesday. Instead, he will break from the far better post 14.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hansen’s name had yet to be called and there were only two slots left in the starting gate when post positions were assigned late Wednesday afternoon for Saturday’s 138th Kentucky Derby.

There was a big cheer from the Hansen section of the audience when the name Daddy Long Legs was assigned the dreaded rail post, leaving 2011 juvenile champion Hansen to start from No. 14.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Baffert counting on his luck to hold

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bob Baffert knows all about the luck of the draw. Had he still been in the air, instead of on the ground, when he suffered a heart attack in late March in Dubai, he doesn’t think he would be have been here at Churchill Downs for the post position draw on Wednesday, the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, nothing.

“He thought he was checking out,” said Baffert’s close friend, owner Bernie Schiappa.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Bodemeister early favorite from post 6

Bodemeister, who will break from post 6, has been made the Kentucky Derby favorite. He is 9-2 on Daily Racing Form National Handicapper Mike Watchmaker's line and 4-1 on the Churchill Downs track line.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Projected favorites Bodemeister and Union Rags avoided landing post positions to the extreme inside or outside when in Wednesday afternoon’s post draw for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

The former, the Churchill Downs morning-line favorite at 4-1, drew post 6, while Union Rags, the 9-2 second choice, has post 4. Daily Racing Form National Handicapper Mike Watchmaker has Bodemeister at 9-2 and Union Rags at 5-1.

Churchill Downs: Good Deed as usual looms a threat in Eight Belles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's been all or nothing to this point for Good Deed, who has registered four one-sided victories and finished far back twice in six career starts.

On Friday, trainer Steve Margolis will be looking to hit the "all" button again when he sends Good Deed out as one of the top contenders in Churchill Downs' $100,000 Eight Belles Stakes.
