She Feels Pretty may not need another race before Breeders' Cup

Julie Wright
She Feels Pretty turned aside a challenge from Diamond Rain in the E.P. Taylor.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – She Feels Pretty, a head winner over European invader Diamond Rain in Saturday’s Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine, will be aimed at the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 1.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux said Monday that the coming weeks will decide whether she simply trains She Feels Pretty to that race or runs her once beforehand, perhaps in a spot like the Grade 3, $175,000 Waya Stakes at Aqueduct on Oct. 5.

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela was injured in a training spill Sunday at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who has not ridden since December 2016 but is hoping to make a comeback in coming months, was briefly hospitalized on Sunday after an incident during morning workouts at Del Mar.

Valenzuela was unseated prior to the start of a workout aboard the unraced gelding Fire Mountain, trained by Peter Eurton. Valenzuela was treated and released by midday.

“I’m sore,” Valenzuela said in a brief interview with Daily Racing Form early Sunday afternoon. “I’m relaxing.”

Mandella may not run Kopion until Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

Debra A. Roma
After running third in the Clement Hirsch, Kopion may not run again until the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Kopion, the dominant winner of the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff in May but second in her last two starts, worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds at Del Mar for a fall campaign that has yet to be finalized.

Trainer Richard Mandella said on Sunday that Kopion may run in the Grade 3 Chillingworth Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, or may not start until the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 1.

“Our next race might be the Breeders’ Cup,” Mandella said. “She runs well fresh.”

It's been a summer to remember for jockey Gonzalez

Ricky Gonzalez rode Velocity ($72) to an upset victory in Saturday's Del Mar Oaks.

DEL MAR, Calif. – For the record book, Velocity’s upset win in Saturday’s Del Mar Oaks was the second career Grade 1 win for jockey Ricky Gonzalez.

In a sense, though, it was his first public win at that level. There was nothing wrong with Fair Maiden’s surprise win in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita in December 2020, other than it occurred during the pandemic before an empty grandstand.

“It was Covid,” Gonzalez said on Sunday morning in the Del Mar stable area. “There was no crowd or anything.”

Sovereignty puts finishing touches on Travers prep

Barbara D. Livingston
In his final work for the Travers, Sovereignty (right) worked five furlongs in 1:00.70 over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though he wasn’t on his back Saturday morning, Junior Alvarado may have had the best seat in the house to judge Sovereignty’s final workout before his engagement in next Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes.

Alvarado was aboard Fort Nelson, a recent maiden winner, who was Sovereignty’s workmate Saturday morning. Sovereignty, ridden by regular exercise rider Neil Poznansky, started about two lengths in front of Fort Nelson and Alvarado, the pair having broken off at the five-furlong pole on the Oklahoma training track.

Chapter One set for debut in tough maiden sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Michael McCarthy will debut his quick 2-year-old Chapter One in a Saturday maiden race at Del Mar.

The first-time starter Chapter One may very well have an early lead in what appears to be a tough maiden race for 2-year-olds at 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Saturday.

“He seems like he’s quick,” trainer Michael McCarthy said on Thursday. “This horse has a good turn of foot.”

Chapter One may need such speed to beat six rivals in Saturday’s third race.

Miso Phansy to run in Solana Beach over Del Mar Oaks

Benoit Photo
Trainer Leonard Powell has opted to run Miso Phansy (middle) in the Solana Beach instead of the Del Mar Oaks.

Miso Phansy is entered in Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks and Sunday’s $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes at Del Mar, and more likely to appear in the less valuable of the two races.

Miso Phansy fits in both races, but the Solana Beach represents “easier company,” trainer Leonard Powell said.

From a strategic standpoint, Sunday’s race may better suit Miso Phansy, who drew post 11 on Saturday and the inside post in a field of 11 in the Solana Beach.

“In the Del Mar Oaks, we didn’t get a very good post,” Powell said.

Schwarzenegger to await maiden race

Barbara D. Livingston
Schwarzenegger was entered in two spots this week but won’t run in either one.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The highly touted 2-year-old Schwarzenegger’s debut continues to be put on hold.

Already scratched a couple of times, he was entered in two spots this week but won’t run in either one. On Thursday, he scratched out of a maiden race when a midday rainstorm prompted New York Racing Association officials to move the final four scheduled turf races to the dirt, including a 5 1/2-furlong maiden turf sprint in which Schwarzenegger was entered.
