Drill won Saturday's Laz Barrera Stakes while  ridden by jockey Martin Garcia, who was aboard three winners for Baffert on Saturday at Hollywood Park. But it appears it will be the last time they team together in the immediate future.

Baffert told the Paulick Report website on Sunday that he no longer intends to ride Garcia because the rider did not appear for morning workouts last week and that Garcia said he wants to take mounts for other stables.

Garcia declined to comment between races on Sunday. His agent, Jim Pegram, would not elaborate on the dispute.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Drill, the winner of the Grade 3 Laz Barrera Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday, may be bound for New York in June.

Trainer Bob Baffert said that Drill will be kept to stakes around one turn for the foreseeable future, and that the $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes for 3-year-olds over seven furlongs on June 9 is a potential next start.

“The Woody Stephens is the next logical race, but we’ll play it by ear,” Baffert said.

He emphasized that Drill’s next start “will be a one-turn race.”

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — A rejuvenated Dixie Strike  defeated 1-2 favorite Tu Endie Wei with an impressive closing run under Patrick Husbands in the $280,000 Selene Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.

After trailing the field early, Dixie Strike  ($9.10) made an eye-catching inside move heading into the far turn in the Grade 3 event for 3-year-old fillies. She collared Tu Endie Wei at the eighth pole before drawing away to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths, in a quick time of 1:43.79 for 1 1/16 miles.

A terrific 13-race Friday card with seven stakes and no claiming events awaits Preakness eve fans at Pimlico in Baltimore, where the historic Pimlico Special is being revived after having been dormant since 2008.

The $300,000 Pimlico Special is being run as a Grade 3 event, having displaced what had been the William Donald Schaefer Handicap so as to retain its graded status. The 1 3/16-mile race drew some of the best older horses in training, including Alternation, Nehro, Hymn Book, Toby’s Corner, and Mission Impazible among the field of 10.

 ALTOONA, Iowa -- Cresco Direct Hit kicked clear from a demanding duel with defending champ and stablemate Mutti Blues to take the $70,000 John Wayne Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Saturday night.

The 7-year-old Cresco Direct Hit, owned by Maggi Moss and trained by Chris Richard, had plenty left after blazing through early fractions of 21.98 and 45.07 seconds to resist the spirited rally of the Lynn Chleborad-trained Cainam to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

ALBANY, Calif. – While the photo finish sign flashed, Chips All In’s rider Aaron Gryder told Stoney Fleece’s rider Kevin Krigger after the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes that he would be posing for pictures after the race.

He was right as Stoney Fleece put his nose on the wire, beating the pacesetting favorite in the final stride of the 1 1/16-mile turf race.

“Aaron knew I nailed him, but I thought it was iffy,” said Krigger. “I’m glad he knew because it made me feel a lot better galloping back.”

Gryder said, “Kevin thought I had [held on], but I told him I didn’t.”

ELMONT, N.Y. - Owner Brereton Jones and trainer Larry Jones were rewarded for their decision to skip last week’s Kentucky Derby when Mark Valeski rallied to win Saturday’s Grade 2 Peter Pan at Belmont Park in a solid, albeit not spectacular performance.

Despite racing wide throughout under Rosie Napravnik, Mark Valeski surged past the pacesetting 47-1 longshot Right to Vote at the eighth pole and persevered to the wire to beat that horse by 1 1/4 lengths. It was one-half length back to Street Life in third.

Ponzi Scheme, far enough back in the pack to avoid a chain reaction spill involving five horses, ran down Flat Bold in deep stretch to win the opening-day feature Saturday at Monmouth Park, the $75,000 Decathlon Stakes for sprinters.

MIAMI - Trainer Stanley Gold picked right up where he left off last summer and fall at Calder in the Florida Stallion Stakes, sweeping Saturday’s In Summation and French Village stakes with Fort Loudon and Redbud Road.

Fort Loudon swept all three legs of the open division of the 2011 Florida Stallion Series for 2-year-olds while Redbud Road won the Desert Vixen and was beaten a nose in the Susan’s Girl for 2-year-old fillies.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Jockey Luis Quinonez swept both divisions of the $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park on Saturday, guiding Boca Bay to a half-length win against fellow colts and geldings, then returning to take the fillies side of the 1 1/16-mile race with Im a Bear.
