Woodbine: Strait of Dover handles first two-turn assignment in Marine

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Strait of Dover established himself as a contender for the June 24 Queen’s Plate with a decisive score Saturday at Woodbine in the $156,300 Marine Stakes.

In his first race around two turns, Strait of Dover tracked the leading Incredicat through moderate fractions in the 1 1/16-mile route for 3-year-olds. Strait of Dover assumed command exiting the far turn, and then drew off through the stretch to prevail by 6 1/2 lengths, in 1:43.44. Classic Bryce outran lukewarm favorite Holiday Promise by three-quarters of a length for third in the six-horse field.

Hollywood Park: Drill wins Barrera, makes case for staying a one-turn specialist

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - It is safe to say that Drill’s days of racing around two turns are over.

Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park, Drill ($4.40) won the third sprint stakes of his career in the $98,000 Laz Barrera Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds. A colt by Lawyer Ron, Drill has won 4 of 11 starts in his career, and has won 4 of 6 starts around one turn. He is winless in five starts around two turns.

Delaware: Dutrow's backup North Freeway cruises in Winter Melody

Trainer Tony Dutrow scratched Bahama Bound, the 8-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s opening-day feature at Delaware Park, the $50,000 Winter Melody Stakes, but backup North Freeway still got the job done for the stable.

North Freeway, a 4-year-old filly claimed for $35,000 in December, stretched out beyond six furlongs for the first time since last August and cruised to a front-running victory in the 1 1/16-mile Winter Melody, the first local prep for fillies and mares on the road to the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap.

Hollywood Park: Teddy’s Promise, Turbulent Descent in collision course for Desert Stormer

The Grade 1 winners Teddy’s Promise and Turbulent Descent are on course for the $70,000 Desert Stormer Handicap on June 17 at Hollywood Park.

Teddy’s Promise, the winner of the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita last December, won the minor Time To Leave Stakes over five furlongs at Hollywood Park on May 6, her first start since January.

Turbulent Descent, the winner of the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga last summer, has not started since finishing sixth in the La Brea Stakes.

“It will be quite a race,” said Ron Ellis, who trains Teddy’s Promise.

Presque Isle Downs: Full fields as 100-day meet begins

Presque Isle Downs begins its sixth season of racing Tuesday. The Erie, Pa., track will hold its customary 100-day meet.

Two new barns have been added to the backstretch and the benefits can already be seen, according to Debbie Howells, Presque Isle’s director of racing. The new barns increase the number of stalls from 500 to 596.

“We have 100 more horses on the grounds than we did this time last year,” Howells said. “People shipped in early this year and it has shown in the entries the first two days.”

Tuesday is opening day at Presque Isle Downs and that means 3-year-olds take center stage with a pair of $100,000, six-furlong stakes, the sixth running of the Inaugural for fillies and the Tom Ridge for colts and geldings.

Gypsy Robin is now a graded stakes winner after taking the Grade 2 seven-furlong Beaumont at Keeneland in her last out April 15, and trainer Wesley Ward plans on increasing her credentials.

She is already a Grade 2 winner. Hopefully if she runs her race we will point her to a Grade 1, probably at Saratoga later this summer,” Ward said.

Hollywood Park: Berrio hospitalized following second stroke

Jockey Omar Berrio was hospitalized on Friday after suffering a stroke that left him with some paralysis on the right side of his body, according to trainer A.C. Avila.

Avila employs Berrio as an exercise rider at Santa Anita and said the 43-year-old rider had suffered some damage to his speech. The extent of the injuries was being determined on Saturday, he said.

“We don’t know yet,” he said. “They’re doing scans.”

Delaware Park: Mac Robertson racing on three fronts this summer

Win Willy will be seeking a repeat victory in the Oaklawn Handicap.

Mac Robertson intends to employ his version of divide and conquer this summer throughout the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Robertson, 38, will spread his string of horses among Canterbury Park, Arlington Park, and Delaware Park, where he finished third in the 2011 trainer standings with 31 wins from 142 starters.
