Woodbine: Slow fractions help Something Extra steal Connaught Cup

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — The longshot Something Extra outran the other speed and kept on going to take the $154,200 Connaught Cup Stakes convincingly at Woodbine on Sunday.

The Grade 2 Connaught was the second of three winners on the card for Eurico Da Silva, who guided Something Extra through slow fractions of 23 and :45.59 seconds in the seven-furlong turf sprint. They prevailed by 2 1/2 lengths over a wide-closing Big Band Sound. Artic Fern finished third, and the favored American shipper Mutual Trust was seventh in the 11-horse field.

Belmont: Compliance Officer, Gitchee Goomie win turf stakes for New York-breds

Compliance Officer, ridden by Javier Castellano, improves to 6 for 6 against New York-bred competition by taking the Kingston,.

Compliance Officer began defense of his New York-bred turf championship with a good-looking return to the races, taking Sunday’s $125,000 Kingston Stakes by three-quarters of a length at Belmont Park.

Meanwhile, Gitchee Goomie got first jump on defending statebred female turf champion Hessonite and held off that filly’s late charge for a half-length victory in the $125,000 Mount Vernon Stakes for fillies and mares.

Hollywood Park: Antares World now with Mullins

Jeff Mullins has taken over the training of the multiple stakes winner Antares World, who worked five furlongs on turf in 1:00.80 on Sunday.

Previously trained by Steve Specht in Northern California, Antares World may run in the $100,000 Beverly Hills Handicap over 1 1/4 miles on turf on June 24. Owned by Larry and Marianne Williams, Antares World, 5, has won three stakes at Golden Gate Fields in her career.

Overall, she has won 8 of 25 starts and $434,328.

Hollywood Park: Debut winner Amarish earns stakes shot

Amarish is bound for a juvenile stakes in coming months after an impressive win in Saturday’s second race, his career debut, at Hollywood Park.

Trained by Jeff Bonde for Jerry Durant, Amarish led throughout 4 1/2 furlongs, winning by 7 3/4 lengths under jockey Edwin Maldonado.

Amarish was timed in 50.98 seconds, not far off of Southern Fireball’s 2009 track record of 50.67 seconds.

“I could have broken the track record, but they don’t pay extra for that,” Maldonado said. “He galloped out very strongly.”

Hollywood Park: Wilkinson, Mr. Commons will meet again in Shoemaker Mile

Wilkinson and Mr. Commons, the first two finishers in Saturday’s $150,000 American Handicap, will have a rematch for a much larger prize in the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile at Betfair Hollywood Park on June 30.

Wilkinson will have a chance to prove his 44-1 upset in the American Handicap was not a fluke, while Mr. Commons will attempt to end a two-race losing streak.

Remington: Bps Cartels Alibi scores 11-1 upset in $1.1 million Futurity

Bps Cartels Alibi edged El Duero by a head to win Oklahoma’s richest race, the Grade 1, $1.1 million Heritage Place Futurity for Quarter Horses, on Saturday night at Remington Park. Pyc Kant Katch Me, the race favorite and fastest qualifier, was a late scratch after he sat down in the starting gate.

Bps Cartels Alibi ($24.80) broke midpack, but found his way to the lead, and then held his ground while dueling with El Duero. Bps Cartels Alibi covered 350 yards on a fast track in 17.58 seconds. Ricky Ramirez was aboard for Raymundo Villarreal Jr., and trainer Trey Wood.

The lightly raced filly Night Time Fun, making just her third career start, shocked three-time stakes winner Navy Chapel in Saturday night’s $51,050 It’s Binn Too Long Stakes for West Virginia-bred 3-year-old fillies at Charles Town.

A daughter of Windsor Castle trained by James W. Casey for Taylor Mountain Farm, Night Time Fun ($28.20), the second longest price in a five-horse field, set the pace under Antonio Lopez and held off a trio of fillies to get the win by a half-length. She completed the 4 1/2 furlongs in 52.54 seconds.

Hollywood Park: Mullins tips hat to Howard after Wilkinson's huge upset in American Handicap

INGLEWOOD, Calif.- Wilkinson, the latest addition to trainer Jeff Mullins’s stable, was the shocking winner of Saturday’s $150,000 American Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Wilkinson ($90.60) arrived at Hollywood Park last week from trainer Neil Howard’s stable at Churchill Downs and won the second stakes of his career in the Grade 2 American Handicap. Mullins credited Howard with the victory after leaving the winner’s circle.

“We just galloped him five days and ran him,” Mullins said. “We’ve got to give all the credit to Neil Howard.”
