LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Island Bound took full advantage of a swift pace when she rallied to victory Saturday night in the $110,100 Winning Colors Stakes, the first of three Grade 3 stakes on a Downs After Dark card at Churchill Downs.
With Leandro Goncalves aboard for owner Bob Manfuso and trainer Ian Wilkes, Island Bound notched her first career stakes triumph in 20 overall tries when prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths over Beat the Blues in a field of eight fillies and mares. Speedacious was another 1 3/4 lengths back third, with Gleaming fourth.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Despite having to check sharply on the stretch turn, Devil in Disguise scored a convincing 4 1/2-length win over The Gov in the $50,000 River Rock Casino Stakes for 3-year-olds at Hastings on Saturday.
Devil in Disguise was sent off as the heavy favorite in the six-horse field and paid $3.70.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Game On Dude was tipping his readiness for his first start since March with his recent workouts.
What trainer Bob Baffert could not have envisioned was that Game On Dude would win Saturday’s $150,000 Californian Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths at Betfair Hollywood Park in his first start in more than two months.
“I knew he’d run well, but I didn’t think I’d see that,” Baffert said.
Sorta Special became a stakes winner Saturday at Arapahoe Park, when she led start to finish in the $43,523 Ingrid Knotts for Colorado-bred fillies and mares. She won by a half-length over Sweet Dixie Van, while it was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Irish Hazel V.
Sorta Special ($28) set fractions of 22.54 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.44 for the half-mile before covering six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.43. Luis Rodriguez rode the winner for Lynda Hall and trainer W. Monk Hall.
String King sat just off the pace, and then forged to the lead into the stretch en route to a half-length win over Wildrally in the $50,000 John Franks Memorial at Louisiana Downs on Saturday.
Ladyzarbridge was a clear winner of the co-featured $50,000 Honeymoon. Both races were at a mile on turf, and restricted to horses bred in Louisiana.
OCEANPORT, N.J.- The Hunk overpowered the competition Saturday, beating Hop Skip and Away by 2 1/4 lengths in the $62,800 John J. Reilly Handicap for New Jersey-breds at Monmouth Park.
Trainer Ben Perkins Jr. had been pointing for this spot for a long time, and patience paid off as The Hunk earned his first stakes victory.
