Calder: Angelica Zapata, Canadian Mistress continue rivalry in Nancy's Glitter

MIAMI – Angelica Zapata and Canadian Mistress, who finished a neck apart in that order in the Emergency Nurse Stakes last month, will match strides again Saturday under similar conditions in Calder’s $75,000 Nancy’s Glitter Handicap at 1 1/16 miles.

Angelica Zapata has never been better. The Emergency Nurse was the second consecutive stakes success for the 4-year-old Angelica Zapata, who paired up career-best 97 Beyer Speed Figures in her last two starts. She also won the Sara’s Success going a mile in the slop on May 19.

Shigeki Kikkawa
Silver Max will race farther than he has before when he starts in the American Derby.

Lady of Shamrock galloped out well clear of the field after a troubled trip, leaving Sadler immediately looking forward to Saturday’s $350,000 American Oaks.

“She just zoomed,” he said of the way she traveled after the wire.

Ellis Park: Kathmanblu seeks wake-up call in Ellis Park Turf

In the spring of last year Kathmanblu was regarded as one of the top 3-year-old fillies in the country. Having won four stakes by that point, she went into the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes and finished third as the favorite, and then returned a month later and ran sixth at 4-1 odds in the Kentucky Oaks.

Fourteen months later with her form in decline, Kathmanblu is just trying to win a race – specifically Saturday’s $50,000 Ellis Park Turf.

Northlands: Claresmiezie tops inaugural running of Red Smith

It is appropriate the $50,000 Ky Alta Handicap will share the stage with the inaugural running of the R.K. “Red” Smith Handicap at Northlands Park Saturday. Smith trained Ky Alta and many other stars at Northlands Park over his long career.

Smith, who was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2004, is close to reaching 2,500 wins. With 2,492 wins Smith will surely make it to the mark before the season is over. He currently has about 30 horses in training.

“Fancy As has to be the highlight of my career,” said Smith, who is 74.

Arlington Park: Sky Blazer stepping up for Arlington Handicap

Tom Keyser
Sky Blazer has shipped from New York to Chicago for Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Arlington Handicap.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Two New Yorkers flew to Chicago on Tuesday for the Arlington Handicap. Five-year-old Boisterous has won three graded stakes and is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. But Sky Blazer just might be the horse with the brighter future.

The 4-year-old Barclay Tagg-trained gelding has never run a bad race in a 10-start career while improving steadily, and his most recent performance, a blowout third-level allowance win May 19 at Belmont, felt like a breakthrough.

Parx: Three Brooklyn Handicap winners meet in Greenwood Cup

Tom Keyser
Birdrun nearly tosses jockey Rajiv Maragh at the start of the Brooklyn Handicap last month. Birdrun, the 2011 Brooklyn champ, is one of three Brooklyn winners in the Greenwood Cup on Saturday at Parx Racing along with Redeemed and Eldaafer.

Three past winners of the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap will test their prowess at the rarely run dirt distance of 1 1/2 miles in Saturday’s Greenwood Cup at Parx Racing. Even though 2009 Brooklyn winner Eldaafer and 2011 Brooklyn champion Birdrun have shown they can win at the demanding Greenwood Cup distance, it’s hard to look past reigning Brooklyn kingpin Redeemed.

The 4-year-old Redeemed, a 10-length winner over Eldaafer in last month’s Brooklyn at Belmont Park, is the even-money favorite on the Parx mornng line for the $300,000 Greenwood Cup.

Hollywood Park: Switch tries to regain form in A Gleam

Barbara D. Livingston
Switch will try to break an eight-race losing streak when she runs Saturday in the A Gleam Handicap.

Switch has been one of the best older females on the Southern California circuit for the better part of three seasons, but she has reached a critical juncture in her career, so there will be plenty riding on her, not just a good chunk of the bettors’ money, when she competes on Saturday in the Grade 2, $200,000 A Gleam Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The A Gleam, at seven furlongs, is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, also at seven furlongs, at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.
