Arlington moves post time to 5 p.m. for Thursday card

Arlington Park has moved its racing program on Thursday from a regularly scheduled 1 p.m. first post to 5 p.m. because of radically hot weather, the track announced Wednesday. The forecast high temperature at Arlington on Thursday is 103 degrees with a heat index of 108, which would be the hottest day in what has become an extended heat wave in the area.

Woodbine: Prince of Wales nominees led by fillies Irish Mission, Dixie Strike

Fort Erie will provide the stage but Woodbine will provide the players for Act II of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on July 15.

The Prince of Wales will be run over 1 3/16 miles on Fort Erie’s dirt surface and 13 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds have been nominated.

Heading the list, and scheduled to participate, are Irish Mission and Dixie Strike, who were the only fillies in the Queen’s Plate and finished second and third in the field of 14 here June 24.

Northlands: Smart Roar back at favorite track for Friday feature

Smart Roar should be happy running over her favorite track when she returns to Northlands Park in an allowance race restricted to fillies and mares who have not won a race other than maiden or claiming in 2012. There is also a $40,000 claiming option in the conditions of the race and Surfin’ Sydney is the only one of the seven horses entered in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint eligible to be claimed.

Woodbine: Estella tries to put trainer Fung into Ontario Damsel spotlight

Prairie Meadows: Debut winners top Iowa Stallion Futurity

Friday night’s $60,000 Iowa Stallion Futurity, a restricted 5 1/2-furlong sprint for nominated and eligible 2-year-olds, drew a full field of 12. To be eligible, a horse must be the progeny of a qualifying stallion and, subsequently, scheduled fees must be paid during the nomination process.

The field is headed by the filly Wild Ritzy and the gelding Senor Captain, who both impressed when cruising to victory in their only start.

Thistledown: Big weekend begins with Cleveland Gold Cup

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - The biggest weekend of racing at Thistledown gets an early start Friday when the $75,000 Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup will be run for the 45th time. The 1 1/8-mile Gold Cup, for 3-year-old registered Ohio-breds, drew a field of 13, topped by two-time stakes winner Diavoletto.

Saturday’s card will feature Ohio’s only graded stakes, the Grade 3, $100,000 Ohio Derby, and the $50,000 Cleveland Kindergarden.

Hastings: Friday feature rematches Commandress, Dorreen’s Delight, and Satellite Debris

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Commandress, Dorreen’s Delight, and Satellite Debris finished one-two-three in a 1 1/16-mile $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-old fillies June 15, and they look like the main players in a similar race which will serve as the feature race at Hastings on Friday.

Woodbine: Atlantic Hurricane, Roxy Gap square off in Friday turf sprint

Atlantic Hurricane will prep for the July 29 Royal North Stakes in a turf sprint Friday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Atlantic Hurricane, last year’s Canadian champion female sprinter, heads a six-horse field Friday on the Woodbine turf in the six-furlong $89,400 allowance prep for the July 29 Royal North Stakes.

Atlantic Hurricane was a front-runner when she was claimed for a bargain $40,000 in June of last year by trainer Stuart Simon. She subsequently won two optional claimers on the grass, along with the Grade 3 Seaway Stakes on the Polytrack.

Mountaineer: Kentucky shippers Revelstoke, Strike Impact take turf co-features

Logical horses shipping in from Kentucky swept the first two stakes of the season Tuesday night at Mountaineer.

Revelstoke, a 4-year-old filly based at the Thoroughbred  Training Center near Keeneland, cruised to a 4 3/4-length score in the $75,000 Firecracker for fillies and mares going a mile on turf.

One race later, heavy favorite Strike Impact ($3.60), an 8-year-old Churchill-based gelding, rallied to get up by a neck over Sal the Barber in the $75,000 Independence Day, also at one mile on turf.
