Hastings: Taylor and Todd may continue stakes roll with Marketway in Boulevard Casino

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Once again trainer Troy Taylor and owner Glen Todd will have the favorite in a stakes race at Hastings. What else is new?

They have won more than half of the stakes at the meet and by Sunday they will probably have another in the bank if Evelyn’s Dancer runs true to form in Saturday’s Supernaturel. Sunday, they have Marketway entered in the $50,000 Boulevard Casino for 2-year-old fillies. The six-furlong sprint drew seven horses, and while Marketway is a deserving favorite, she is by no means a cinch.

Belmont: Clement's pair hard to separate in Voodoo Dancer

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Fontley won her U.S. debut against third-level allowance company on May 28 at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Earlier this meet, trainer Todd Pletcher won the Tweedside Stakes, named for a Grade 1-winning mare he had trained.

Sunday, at Belmont Park, trainer Christophe Clement will try to pull off a similar feat when he sends out two contenders in the $90,000 Voodoo Dancer Stakes, named for a nine-time stakes winning mare Clement previously trained.

Clement will send out the uncoupled entry of Fontley and Wallis in the Voodoo Dancer, scheduled for one mile on the Widener Turf course. Separating the two is not easy.

Monmouth: Done Talking switches back to dirt for Long Branch

Barbara D. Livingston
Illinois Derby winner Done Talking has been freshened since his last start.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Hamilton Smith hasn’t caught Haskell fever but that could change if Done Talking runs well in the $100,000 Long Branch Stakes for 3-year-olds on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

The Long Branch is the final local prep for the $1 million Haskell on July 29. The first two Long Branch finishers traditionally receive invitations to the meet’s premier event.

Smith, stabled at Laurel Park, isn’t looking that far ahead. The goal now is returning Done Talking to positive form following a demanding spring.

Hastings: Beating odds nothing new for Inouye

VANCOUVER, British Columbia − Trainer Tak Inouye will try to win Sunday’s $50,000 Boulevard Casino Stakes at Hastings with Lil Miss Bean, who figures to be a bit of a longshot in the six-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies. Inouye knows something about longshots, though. He won the 1965 Queen’s Plate aboard Whistling Sea, the Roy Johnson-trained horse who became the first Western-based runner to win the race. Inouye was a longshot just to ride Whistling Sea, let alone win the race.

FORT ERIE, Ontario − The Prince of Wales Stakes, scheduled for next Sunday at Fort Erie, will have its post-position draw Wednesday, and the drawmaster will be the none other than Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, winner of the Triple Crown in 1973 with the mighty Secretariat.

The Prince of Wales is the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The first leg, the Queen’s Plate, was won by Strait of Dover on June 24 at Woodbine.

Pleasanton: Jockey Herrera dies of head injuries following spill

Alameda County Fair
Jockey Jorge Herrera died of head injuries following a Thursday riding accident at Pleasanton.

Herrera’s death was the first at Pleasanton since Juan Gonzalez, exactly 37 years earlier, on July 5, 1975.

Del Mar limiting field sizes

Maiden races for 2-year-olds at Del Mar this summer will have a maximum of 10 starters, director of racing Tom Robbins said on Thursday.

The decision comes a day after the New York Racing Association announced that 2-year-old maiden races for sprinters at Saratoga this summer will have a maximum of eight starters.

Robbins said the decision was reached after consulting with the Thoroughbred Owners of California. The issue was discussed in the past, but Robbins said the owners’ group rejected the limited field size in a conversation several years ago.

Prairie Meadows: Filly may be favored over males in Iowa Stallion Stakes

The restricted $60,000 Iowa Stallion Stakes, a mile and 70-yard race for eligible and nominated 3-year-olds, headlines Saturday evening’s nine-race program at Prairie Meadows.

The field of seven, which is composed of four geldings, two fillies, and the Minnesota-bred colt Sun Country, is headed by the Iowa-bred filly Rudy’s Edge, who has won two straight route races locally, both for trainer Lynn Chleborad. Most recently, Rudy’s Edge used her tactical speed to good effect when holding older female rivals safe by a half-length in a June 21 Iowa-bred allowance.
