Parx: Three Brooklyn Handicap winners meet in Greenwood Cup

Tom Keyser
Birdrun nearly tosses jockey Rajiv Maragh at the start of the Brooklyn Handicap last month. Birdrun, the 2011 Brooklyn champ, is one of three Brooklyn winners in the Greenwood Cup on Saturday at Parx Racing along with Redeemed and Eldaafer.

Three past winners of the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap will test their prowess at the rarely run dirt distance of 1 1/2 miles in Saturday’s Greenwood Cup at Parx Racing. Even though 2009 Brooklyn winner Eldaafer and 2011 Brooklyn champion Birdrun have shown they can win at the demanding Greenwood Cup distance, it’s hard to look past reigning Brooklyn kingpin Redeemed.

The 4-year-old Redeemed, a 10-length winner over Eldaafer in last month’s Brooklyn at Belmont Park, is the even-money favorite on the Parx mornng line for the $300,000 Greenwood Cup.

The six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds goes as race 3 on an eight-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific.

Hollywood Park: Switch tries to regain form in A Gleam

Barbara D. Livingston
Switch will try to break an eight-race losing streak when she runs Saturday in the A Gleam Handicap.

Switch has been one of the best older females on the Southern California circuit for the better part of three seasons, but she has reached a critical juncture in her career, so there will be plenty riding on her, not just a good chunk of the bettors’ money, when she competes on Saturday in the Grade 2, $200,000 A Gleam Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The A Gleam, at seven furlongs, is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, also at seven furlongs, at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Del Mar's greatest hits: The unforgettable horses and moments

In 1937, FDR, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Hirohito, and Chamberlain were the world leaders. Jack Nicholson and Colin Powell were born. The blimp known as the Hindenberg had gone down, and the aviatrix Amelia Earhart was lost at sea. Mailing a letter cost three cents, filling the gas tank ran about a buck. And Bing Crosby? Well, he was 39, hadn’t sung “White Christmas” yet, and hadn’t made his first “Road” picture. But he was a star. On the side, he liked golf and horses and pumped his money in both directions.

Monmouth Park: Isn't He Clever shortens up to six furlongs in Jersey Shore Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Isn’t He Clever works a half-mile in 51.60 seconds on Monday at Churchill Downs.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Isn’t He Clever is the most accomplished stakes runner in the Grade 3, $100,000 Jersey Shore for 3-year-old sprinters on Saturday at Monmouth Park. But that doesn’t make him a lock against five rivals.

A recent addition to the Steve Asmussen barn, Isn’t He Clever ran well at shorter distances early in his career, including a victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Riley Allison Futurity to conclude his 2-year-old campaign at Sunland Park.

He also has some success stretching out, winning the Borderland Derby before finishing second in the Sunland Park Derby.

Delaware Park: Don't overlook Euro imports in Dick Memorial

Barbara D. Livingston
Starformer is the only member of the Dick Memorial lineup to have won at 1 3/8 miles.

A trio of 4-year-old fillies who began their racing careers in Europe could be live longshots in Saturday’s Grade 3 Robert Dick Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares.

The $200,000 Dick, to be contested at 1 3/8 miles on turf, and the $50,000 Oh Say for 3-year-old sprinters are the undercard stakes on a card headed by the Grade 2, $400,000 Delaware Oaks.

Delaware Park: Grace Hall back on home track for Delaware Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Grace Hall is one of three Tony Dutrow-trained runners in Saturday’s Grade 2, $400,000 Delaware Oaks.

Trainer Tony Dutrow has won 21 stakes at Delaware Park over the past 19 years, including four that were worth $100,000 or more. He owns four wins in the local prep for the Delaware Oaks, but the top prize in the track’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies has always eluded him.

Assiniboia Downs: Balooga Bull risks perfect record in Harry Jeffrey

Balooga Bull has been perfect in six starts, with four stakes wins among his conquests. On Saturday, Balooga Bull will be facing what is by far his most important test to date as he stretches out to 1 1/16 miles in the $30,000 Harry Jeffrey for 3-year-olds at Assiniboia Downs.

The Harry Jeffrey is the local stakes prep for the $75,000 Manitoba Derby, which will be run over 1 1/8 miles Aug. 6, and it figures to go a long way in separating the pretenders from the contenders for Assiniboia’s most important race.

Indiana Downs: It Happened Again wins Golden Bear in debut for Amoss on closing day of meet

It Happened Again waited patiently on the outside of horses until upper stretch and then blew by a compact field of six older horses to win the $100,000 Golden Bear, one of six stakes on the Wednesday evening closing card of the Indiana Downs meet.

Running for trainer Tom Amoss for the first time, It Happened Again was unhurried while the field set relatively slow fractions of 25.06 seconds, 50.12, and 1.14.31 in the 1 1/16-mile race. When jockey Leandro Goncalves shook the reins at the 6-year-old gelding, he responded and drew off to win by six widening lengths.
