Calder: Candy Coded Kisses shocks in Desert Vixen; Two T’s at Two B stays unbeaten in Dr. Fager

Candy Coded Kisses and Two T’s at Two B provided the long and the short of things for horseplayers Saturday at Calder, capturing the opening divisions of the 2012 Florida Stallion series, the $75,000 Desert Vixen and Dr. Fager stakes.

Candy Coded Kisses rose up from the claiming ranks to register a $51.40 upset in the Desert Vixen, while the undefeated, odds-on favorite Two T’s at Two B returned just $3.20 for his popular victory in the Dr. Fager. Both races were decided at six furlongs.

Monmouth Park: Senator Beck surges late to win Desert Vixen Stakes

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Senator Beck, trapped behind a wall of horses turning for home, was running out of time and luck.

And then Paco Lopez saved the day, wheeling her to the far outside in the $75,200 Desert Vixen Stakes for 3-year-old turf fillies Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

With an electrifying surge, Senator Beck stormed past Peace Preserver to score her first stakes win.

“When she got free, she exploded for me,” Lopez said.

It was a strong rebound performance following a seventh-place finish in the Grade 3 Boiling Springs here last month.

Saratoga: Alpha goes straight to the front and stays there to win Jim Dandy

Alpha showed he will be a strong factor in the Aug. 25 Travers Stakes by scoring a front-running victory in the Jim Dandy.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - When trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and jockey Ramon Dominguez discussed the strategy they wanted to employ with Alpha in Saturday's Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes, they both concluded they wanted to be forwardly placed.

When Alpha easily glided over the Saratoga slop to an uncontested lead entering the first turn, McLaughlin and Dominguez knew they made the right call.

Alpha used his early tactical advantage to cruise to a two-length victory in Saturday's $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes and make him one of the favorites for next month's $1 million Travers Stakes.

Delaware Park: Picko's Pride gets Hockessin on DQ

Picko's Pride was awarded first place through a disqualification and won the $60,000 Stonewall Farm Ocala Hockessin at Delaware Park Saturday afternoon.

Trained by McLean Robertson, Picko's Pride was gaining in late stretch and had to be steadied under jockey Ricardo Santana when Bet The Power shied from the whip in late stretch and bore out. The final margin of victory of Bet The Power, trained by Kenny Smith and ridden by Joe Rocco, was 1 3/4 lengths. For bearing out and interfering late, Bet The Power was disqualified from first and placed second behind Picko's Pride.

Woodbine: Spirited Miss rallies wide to win Duchess Stakes

They also captured the Vandal with the unbeaten 2-year-old Uncaptured.

Parx: Traffic Light romps in the slop winning Crowd Pleaser Stakes

The heavy rainstorm that hit Parx Racing early on the Saturday card gave Traffic Light a huge edge in the $75,500 Crowd Pleaser Stakes for Pennsylvania bred 3-year-olds.

Originally scheduled for the turf, the Crowd Pleaser was rained off onto the sloppy, sealed main track at the same 1 1/16 mile distance.

No one benefited from the switch more than Traffic Light, who set all the pace to beat Yourhonorandglory by six lengths for his third win at the meet on an off track.

Saratoga: Inherit the Gold retired

Inherit the Gold has been retired from racing.

Inherit the Gold, a six-time stakes-winning New York-bred gelding, has been retired from racing, trainer Jim Hooper said Friday.

Inherit the Gold had myriad physical issues, which prompted Hooper to stop on the 6-year-old gelding by Gold Token.

“The biggest thing is the wear and tear on his cartilage of his front ankles,” Hooper said.

Inherit the Gold finished his career with a record of 10-5-3 from 25 starts and earnings of $478,985.

Saratoga: Roman Treasure ready for Honorable Miss

Roman Treasure, who made an impressive 4-year-old debut at Belmont three weeks ago, worked four furlongs in 48.02 seconds Saturday morning over Saratoga’s main track in preparation for Friday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap.

Over a track in which some horses appeared to be laboring in the stretch, Roman Treasure got her final quarter in 23.24 seconds.

“I thought the work was great,” trainer Mike Hushion said. “Her last work was pretty nice, too.”

Saratoga: Stakes horses get chance to work on turf

After overnight rains forced turf workouts to be canceled Friday, four horses prepping for upcoming stakes were granted special permission to breeze over the Oklahoma grass course Saturday. The quartet consisted of a pair from trainer Christophe Clement’s barn, Mystical Star and Right One; trainer Shug McGaughey’s Man o’ War winner Point of Entry, and Harrods Creek for trainer Bill Mott.
