Zeewat, the only runner in the field with a race or a work over the track, pulled clear in the lance to capture Sunday’s $75,250 Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa.
DEL MAR, Calif. - It’s hard to keep a Hall of Famer down. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was off to a sluggish start this summer at Del Mar, winning with just one of his first 30 starters, but he had good fortune shine down on him late Sunday, winning consecutive races in photo finishes, including when City to City nosed out All Star Heart in a thrilling running of the Grade 2, $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes for older female turf horses.
“We needed that,” said Hollendorfer, who also is a co-owner of City to City. “We’ve been stinking the place up quite a bit.”
[bc_video_id:260065:]DEL MAR, Calif. - A stunning parade of longshots through the first six races on Sunday at Del Mar caused carryovers in both the pick five and the pick six going into Wednesday's card, when racing resumes here.
The pick five carryover is $362,503, while the pick six carryover is $240,680.
There were no winning tickets in the pick five, which encompasses the first five races. There is no consolation payoff in that wager, so the entire pool, less takeout, is carried over.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Spurious Precision proved to be more than a capable replacement for stablemate Carried Interest, taking control of Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Saratoga Special soon after the start and drawing clear to a five-length victory at Saratoga.
He’s So Fine, last for the opening half-mile of the 6 1/2-furlong race, rallied between horses to get second under David Cohen by three-quarters of a length over In Harm’s Way, who got third by a head over Drum Roll. Southern Honor and Dan the Tin Man completed the order of finish.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Stonestreet Stables's remarkable 2012 Saratoga meeting became even more remarkable on Sunday after its Kauai Katie sped to an easy 2 3/4-length victory over Salamera and three other overmatched juvenile fillies in the $200,000 Adirondack.
Kauai Katie’s triumph in the Grade 2 Adirondack gave Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet its sixth win from as many starters during the meet. Stonestreet also owns the undefeated juvenile fillies Teen Pauline, who set a course record in her only start, and Dreaming of Julia, who won her debut.
Hezamazing dominated the $50,000 Arapahoe Park Classic for the second time in his career on Sunday, when he rolled to a front-running six-length win. Hezamazing also won the race in 2010 by a romping nine lengths.
Hezamazing was the favorite in Sunday’s renewal and won over Behold de Buy. It was another six lengths back in third to Dance to the Star.
OCEANPORT, N.J. - Jockey Joe Bravo and trainer Christophe Clement connected again at Monmouth Park, winning this time with Funfair in the $60,000 Colleen Stakes on Sunday.
The Bravo-Clement tandem is 6-1-1 in 10 starts at the meet. This was one of their easiest scores.
Funfair, the 3-5 favorite of the crowd of 13,751, rolled to a 3 1/4 length win over I Am Discreet in the five-furlong turf dash for 2-year-old fillies. The time was 56.68 over the course rated firm.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It’s Gail collared pacemaker Blues Dancing in deep stretch to notch her first stakes victory in the $125,000 Eternal Search at Woodbine Sunday.
After mounting a wide rally from sixth, It’s Gail lugged in through the stretch under Luis Contreras and may have impeded the eventual third-place finisher, Future Surprise, a little near the eighth pole. Future Surprise’s rider claimed foul, but after a long inquiry the result stood.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Before departing for Saratoga Monday morning, Delaware Oaks winner Grace Hall tuned up for her start in next Saturday’s Grade 1 Alabama by working four furlongs in 49.40 seconds Sunday morning at Delaware Park.
Grace Hall was one of two significant Alabama players to put in works Sunday morning. In Lingerie, the Black-Eyed Susan winner, breezed four furlongs in 48.83 seconds over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It was finally time for Mucho Macho Man to get back to serious business on Sunday morning, and the winner of the Grade 2 Suburban did so in a serious manner, working a very sharp four furlongs in 47.15 seconds on the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga.
Mucho Macho Man is expected to run in the Grade 1 Woodward on Sept. 1.
