Del Mar: City to City brings gutsy style to Yellow Ribbon

Benoit & Associates
City to City (left), with Corey Nakatani up, wins the John Mabee by a nose over All Star Heart.

DEL MAR, Calif. – By just about all rights, City to City shouldn’t even be racing. She suffered a serious injury to her right front ankle during a workout here at Del Mar two years ago, and Jerry Hollendorfer, her trainer and co-owner, thought her career was over.

But surgery performed by Dr. Wayne McIlwraith and extensive rehabilitation done in Washington state at the Pegasus Training Center of co-owner Mark DeDomenico put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A photograph of Pender Harbour graces the cover of the catalog for the 2012 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society yearling sale that will kick off with a selected session starting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Woodbine sales pavilion. Pender Harbour was a $17,000 CTHS yearling purchase who was Canada’s champion 3-year-old male last year and has earned more than $1.1 million, so it is appropriate that he will be on display in the flesh here in Monday’s $125,000 Elgin Stakes.

Back in May, trainer John Stinebaugh sent out Krash Cartel to win a Quarter Horse trial by an overwhelming 4 1/4 lengths. At the time, he said it was one of the most impressive races he had ever seen from a 2-year-old at Ruidoso Downs.

And then came Pj Chick in Black.

Ellis Park: Formaggio looks strong in Guilliams Memorial

Formaggio looks as good as any Monday in the $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Memorial – that is, if he runs at Ellis Park instead of shipping to Arlington Park for an allowance race.

“We’re leaning toward the Ellis race,” trainer David Carroll said, cautioning that the forecast for steady rain throughout the Labor Day weekend in Kentucky might lead him to change plans. “If they take everything off the turf Monday, we might go ahead and ship to Chicago.”

Monmouth: Trujillo and Cibelli on track to defend titles

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The Monmouth meet heads into the homestretch after Monday with only 10 days left. The track will run Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 7.

In the jockey standings, Elvis Trujillo held a substantial lead over Paco Lopez going into the Saturday card. They finished one-two last year and appear destined to repeat that finish.

If he maintains the lead, Trujillo will have his third Monmouth title in the last four years.

It is much tighter in the training race where defending champion Jane Cibelli once again was setting the pace.
