Fairplex Park: Explain upsets Jim Kostoff Stakes; triple pick-six carryover of $214,764 awaits Wednesday

POMONA, Calif. – The first jackpot of the Los Angeles County Fair race meet will be up for grabs when racing resumes Wednesday for a twilight card at Fairplex Park.

An upset victory by Explain ($12.40) in the $50,000 Jim Kostoff Stakes on Sunday clinched a pick-six carryover of $214,764 before the final race was run.

Explain reeled in 2-5 favorite Mile High Magic in deep stretch of the Kostoff, winning by one length under jockey Jorge Carreno. Explain was making his first start for trainer Robertino Diodoro, who claimed Explain for $32,000 on Aug. 26 at Del Mar.

Zia Park: Safe Trip stalks hot pace, gets up in Premiere Cup Handicap

Safe Trip, who spent his summer racing in New Jersey, became a stakes winner in New Mexico on Sunday when he overtook Streakin’ Mohican by a head in the $100,000 Premiere Cup Handicap at Zia Park. The six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up was the first stakes of the season at the Hobbs, N.M., track.

Belmont Park: Lubash outsprints Compliance Officer in Ashley T. Cole Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. – Lubash vaulted to the head of the class in the New York-bred turf male division with a head victory over defending statebred turf champion Compliance Officer in Sunday’s $150,000 Ashley T. Cole Stakes at Belmont Park.

The win came 24 days after Lubash won the West Point Stakes at Saratoga, also defeating Compliance Officer, who has now lost three consecutive races after winning the Kingston Stakes in May.

Hastings undercard: Evelyn’s Dancer speeds to victory in British Columbia Oaks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Trainer Troy Taylor was a little concerned after Evelyn’s Dancer posted a quick first quarter-mile time of 22.70 seconds in the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks at Hastings on Sunday. Woodbine: Uncaptured pulls away in Swynford Stakes

Uncaptured draws away to win the Swynford Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Uncaptured extended his unbeaten record to four races Sunday at Woodbine with a comfortable score in the $168,900 Swynford Stakes for 2-year-olds.

Uncaptured tracked the dueling leaders Five Iron and Dan the Tin Man in seven-furlong sprint and then went by them nearing the eighth pole before drawing clear to win by 3 1/4 lengths in 1:22.49.

Patrick Husbands rode Uncaptured, who banked $113,400 for owner John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse. Uncaptured paid $2.40 for the victory.

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Bourbon Courage was back in Kentucky early Sunday morning, a day after winning the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby, and all race options are on the table for his fall campaign, including a possible start in either the Breeders’ Cup Classic or Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, trainer Kellyn Gorder said. For the immediate future, however, his connections are debating a start in the Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby or the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby.

Evangeline Downs: Suitefriendsofmine wins stretch duel in fillies division of John Franks Memorial Sales Stakes

OPELOUSAS, La. – Suitefriendsofmine stalked pacesetter I Dare U Em before wearing that rival down after a long stretch drive to win the $60,000 filly division of the John Franks Memorial Sales Stakes on Saturday’s night’s season-ending program.

I Dare U Em gave ground grudgingly in the late going to finish only a half-length back and 7 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Linnie Laurine. The final time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was 1:05.58 over a fast track.
