Del Mar Derby sees My Best Brother, Old Time Hockey renew rivalry

Old Time Hockey beat My Best Brother by a nose in the La Jolla Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. – My Best Brother got the best of Old Time Hockey on opening day July 18 in a division of the Oceanside Stakes, but then Old Time Hockey hung a nose on My Best Brother in the La Jolla Handicap on Aug. 11. Round Three of their budding rivalry is Sunday in the Grade 2, $300,000 Del Mar Derby, but this field has quite a bit of depth, including Eastern invader Howe Great, and Midnight Crooner, who won the other Oceanside division.

Arlington: Maude S. would benefit if turf feature moved to Polytrack

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The remnants of Hurricane Isaac could affect Arlington’s featured race on Sunday.

Race 7, a third-level optional $80,000 claimer for fillies and mares, is carded for about one mile on turf, but with the scattered bits of Isaac forecast to wander into the Chicago area this weekend, turf races could easily wind up on the main track.

Saratoga: Spurious Precision tunes up for Champagne

Spurious Precision, the leader of the 2-year-old division coming off his extremely impressive victory in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special earlier in the meet, breezed an easy half-mile in 48.12 seconds over the main track on Friday. The work was the first for Spurious Precision since the Special.

Del Mar: Friday's pick-six carryover is $432,000

DEL MAR, Calif. - For the second time in less than a week, there is a two-day carryover in the pick six at Del Mar.

Going into last Sunday’s program, the pick six carryover was $570,012. For Friday’s seven-race program, the pick six carryover is $432,260.

Friday, the pick six covers the second through seventh races on a program that begins at 4 p.m. Pacific. The pool of new money could approach $2 million.

Saratoga: Balance the Books comes from last to win With Anticipation

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - When Chad Brown examined the speed figures Wednesday night for the horses entered to run in Thursday's Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga, he was hoping that his horse, Balance the Books, could draw into the field from the also-eligible list.

Though at first he wanted a few scratches so the horse wouldn't break from too far outside, Brown decided that one scratch would be enough.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Phil Gleaves was hoping to find an allowance race for Miami Cat's second start of the Saratoga meet. Instead, the lightly raced 3-year-old bailed out his more accomplished entrymate Csaba and all his backers when he rallied to a neck victory over Film Shot in Thursday's $100,000 Equalize Stakes.

Del Mar notes: Creative Cause remains in light training

Creative Cause has not raced since the Preakness.

Trainer Mike Harrington said the multiple stakes winner Creative Cause is only in light training, a status that has not changed through the Del Mar meeting.

Unraced since finishing third behind I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister in the Preakness Stakes in May, Creative Cause has won 4 of 10 starts and $1,039,000 for owner Heinz Steinmann.

“There is no plan right now,” Harrington said.

Del Mar: Tilde proves versatile in win

DEL MAR, Calif. - Tilde swept the two stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar this summer, showing a different style in winning Wednesday’s $150,000 Generous Portion Stakes over six furlongs.

In the CTBA Stakes over 5 1/2 furlongs on July 20, Tilde led throughout. In the Generous Portion, she was third early, took the lead in early stretch and won by three-quarters of a length over 19-1 Awe’ Some Kitten.

Tilde ran six furlongs in 1:11.42. She has won 3 of 4 starts and $195,060.

Saratoga: Lucky Chappy draws rail for Saranac

Lucky Chappy will start from the rail in Sunday's Grade 3 Saranac Stakes.

Lucky Chappy, runner-up in the Grade 2 Virginia Derby earlier this summer, will break from the rail against nine other 3-year-old turf specialists in Sunday’s Grade 3 Saranac.

Lucky Chappy has yet to win a race since shipping to the United States during the summer of his 2-year-old campaign, but has been close on several occasions in major events, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and earlier this year when beaten a nose by Daddy Nose Best in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby.
