ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse has entered Stealcase, Prospective, and Patrioticandproud in $150,000 Ontario Derby , the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds that will be run on Woodbine Mile Day for the first time.

Casse anticipates sending out just two horses for the Grade 3 Ontario Derby, however, and Stealcase and Prospective both are owned by John Oxley

“I don’t see Prospective and Stealcase running against each other,” said Casse.

“I’m toying with the idea of taking Prospective to Oklahoma.”

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Wise Dan, one of the most talented and versatile horses on the continent, stands out in the 16th running of the $1 million Woodbine Mile, and should be the prohibitive favorite in the Grade 1 turf event.

The Woodbine Mile heads an outstanding Sunday card that also includes three other stakes: the Grade 1, $500,000 Northern Dancer Turf, which is the prep for the Canadian International; the Grade 2, $300,000 Canadian; and the $150,000 Ontario Derby, a newly minted Grade 3.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A life-size bronze of the mighty Zenyatta will be unveiled Sept. 29 at Santa Anita, where its permanent home will be in the paddock gardens near statues of John Henry and Seabiscuit.

The statue of Zenyatta – all 17.2 hands and 1,200 pounds – was created by renowned sculptress Nina Kaiser, who also produced the John Henry statue. The Zenyatta bronze will be south of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from the John Henry bronze on the fountain’s north side. Kaiser spent two years creating the Zenyatta statue.

Algorithms, one of the early leaders of the 3-year-old division after his victory in the Holy Bull Stakes in January, returned to trainer Todd Pletcher’s Belmont Park barn on Wednesday and was on the track Thursday morning.

Algorithms was sidelined with a fractured splint bone discovered the morning of the Fountain of Youth in February. He was the morning-line favorite.

Martin Pedroza escaped serious injury in a spill Wednesday evening at Fairplex Park, and the track’s all-time leading jockey was expected to resume riding Friday or Saturday.

Pedroza was unseated on the clubhouse turn of the seventh race, where his mount, Warren’s Tyler S, appeared to drift out and clip heels with Slippery Slewp. Pedroza went over the top, was thrown hard to the ground, and may have been stepped on by his horse.

Wildcat Creek, winner of his turf debut last month at Monmouth Park, and Gentlemans Code, who put together a three-race winning streak on Polytrack and turf in Kentucky and Illinois this past spring, are the prime contenders in the $50,000 Thomas Clifton Stakes at Penn National. The five-furlong turf sprint is restricted to 3-year-olds who have never won a stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Samitar, a Group 1 winner in Ireland, will try to become a Grade 1 winner in the United States when she heads a field of seven entered in Saturday’s $300,000 Garden City Stakes at Belmont Park.

The Garden City, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies, tops a 10-race card that also includes the Grade 3, $150,000 Noble Damsel, a one-mile turf race for fillies and mares.

Freud’s Notebook, who has run two sharp races since she was claimed for $25,000 in June, returns to the statebred ranks in the $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares at Finger Lakes.

In her two starts since coming into the barn of Bruce Levine, the 5-year-old Freud’s Notebook missed by a head after setting the pace in a seven-furlong starter allowance at Parx and then dueled up front early and finished second in a second-level optional $32,000 claimer going a mile at Monmouth Park.

AUBURN, Wash. – Wasserman, on the downside of his career, will meet some horses on the way up Saturday in the feature race at Emerald Downs, a $20,000 claimer at six furlongs. First post time for the eight-race card is 2 p.m. Pacific.

Bond James Bond and Shanghai Charlie look like the main players in the $50,000 Alberta Breeders’ Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at Northlands Park on Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile race headlines the annual Fall Classic Card that features seven stakes races restricted to horses bred in Alberta. Post time for the first race is noon Mountain. The Breeders’ drew 10 horse and is the last of 11 races.
