LEXINGTON, Ky. – If there were some kind of law mandating a 4-1 favorite in horse races, Keeneland would be in compliance more than most other tracks. The depth of some of the races run so far at the 17-day fall meet has led to the kind of scenario that many horseplayers relish, with quite a few of those possibilities in the offing with a nine-race Wednesday card.

MIAMI – The last time Csaba started, he raced for $1 million in the Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing. On Saturday, Csaba returns home to compete for just a tenth of that purse money in the Grade 3 Spend a Buck Handicap, the only graded stakes on this year’s Festival of the Sun program.

Csaba, a 3-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy, finished seventh and last behind Handsome Mike after being hung wide throughout in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby. It was a trip his trainer, Phil Gleaves, had not expected.

The eighth and final Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In race at this 17-day fall meet will be run Thursday, when a full field of 2-year-old fillies goes postward in the Grade 3, $150,000 Jessamine Stakes.

Kitten’s Point, Oscar Party, and Always Kitten look like the top contenders among the 13 fillies in the 1 1/16-mile Jessamine, including one also-eligible. The winner gets an expenses-paid trip to the Nov. 2 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Keeneland racing secretary Ben Huffman said there is one notable defection from the list of invitees for the sixth and last Grade 1 race of the meet, the $400,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup on Saturday. Lady of Shamrock will not make the trip from California as originally hoped, Huffman said.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Forte dei Marmi and Kissable, both trained here by Roger Attfield, breezed five furlongs in company on the main turf course here Monday morning in preparation for Canadian International Day engagements on Sunday.

Forte de Marmi’s target is the $1.5 million Canadian International, a 1 1/2-mile race for 3-year-olds and up, while Kissable is heading to the $1 million E.P. Taylor, a 1 1/4-mile race for fillies and mares.

Average daily handle figures for Monmouth Park were down considerably during this year’s 65-day meet despite a large increase in average daily attendance, according to figures released by the track on Sunday.

In part, Monmouth Park officials attributed the drops in all-sources and ontrack handle to fewer races held each day this year because of the addition of four Thursday cards with seven races each. Average field size at the track this year was down only slightly, the officials said.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – It’s not all that often that expectations are exceeded the way that Wise Dan and Groupie Doll did in their victories on the opening FallStars Weekend at Keeneland.

But both were spectacular in capturing their respective races as heavy favorites Saturday, pretty much clinching favoritism in their upcoming races in the Nov. 2-3 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The aptly named Run to the Bank has earned more than $100,000 this year, all for owner/trainer Nick Nosowenko. He will try to add to that total Wednesday night at Woodbine in the lone non-claiming race on the card, a $20,000 starter allowance.

Run to the Bank has registered four wins from nine starts at the meet. He commenced his campaign with a victory over $10,000 maidens April 7 and subsequently defeated $20,000 nonwinners-of-two opposition with an 84 Beyer Speed Figure.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – River Seven was a maiden coming into last Sunday’s $224,800 Grey Stakes, in which the undefeated Uncaptured was a heavy favorite. But when the dust cleared following the running of the Grey and a claim of foul by Uncaptured’s rider, Patrick Husbands, it was River Seven in the winner’s circle and the favorite ending 4 1/4 lengths back in fifth.

River Seven, an Ontario-foaled gelding, turned the tables on the Kentucky-bred Tesseron, who had left him a half-length back in second place in a mile and 70-yard maiden race here Sept. 3.

Someplace Else worked out a stalking trip after breaking from the rail Sunday at Zia Park, when she rallied for a 3 3/4-length win over Cali Baby in the $60,000 Chaves County. The one-mile race for fillies and mares was canceled last week due to heavy rains, but brought back on a Sunday card that included three other stakes, all for Quarter Horses.
