Hastings: Marathon's slower pace could work in Sufi Dancer's favor

The 1 7/16-mile starter handicap for 3-year-olds and up drew five horses and will go as race 3 on the eight-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific.

Woodbine: Canadian's nine furlongs may be too short for Kapitale

Four-Footed Fotos
German import Kapitale may prefer more distance than the 1 1/8 miles of the Canadian.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Kapitale, trained in Germany by Andreas Woehler, joined her stablemate Scalo here at Woodbine last week.

Both horses will run Sunday, and both are morning-line favorites, with Kapitale pegged at 5-2 for the Canadian and Scalo at 2-1 for the Northern Dancer.

Kapitale, a 5-year-old who has made just seven lifetime starts, will face eight other fillies and mares in the Canadian, a 1 1/8-mile turf race that offers Grade 2 status and a purse of $300,000.

Freud’s Notebook, who has run two sharp races since she was claimed for $25,000 in June, returns to the statebred ranks in the $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares at Finger Lakes.

In her two starts since coming into the barn of Bruce Levine, the 5-year-old Freud’s Notebook missed by a head after setting the pace in a seven-furlong starter allowance at Parx and then dueled up front early and finished second in a second-level optional $32,000 claimer going a mile at Monmouth Park.
