Belmont: Crossbow set to try the grass

Tom Keyser
On turf or dirt, Crossbow figures to be prominent early.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is hoping a change of surface does for Crossbow what it did for Questing.

After disappointing in his last three stakes tries on dirt, Crossbow is scheduled to make his turf debut in Friday’s $80,000 Home of the Free Stakes at Belmont Park. The Home of the Free is scheduled for seven furlongs on the Widener turf course, though rain is in the forecast.

Earlier this year, McLaughlin moved Questing from the turf to the dirt, and she won three consecutive races, including the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and Grade 1 Alabama.

Northlands: Hollywood Dreams finds nice spot to stretch out in Friday feature

If Hollywood Dreams is ever going to carry his considerable speed around three turns, he should do it when he runs in an allowance race that carries a $40,000 claiming option for 3-year-olds and up at Northlands Park on Friday. The one-mile race, which is restricted to horses that have not won a race at a mile more in 2012, drew six horses, and Hollywood Dreams should be able to control the race right from the start.

Trainer Brian Lynch, a good friend of McAnally’s, has been looking after the 5-year-old All Star Heart.

Woodbine: Pace may be too slow to suit Thislilsoulofmine in turf feature

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Stretch runner Thislilsoulofmine is the class of Friday’s featured eighth race at Woodbine, a second-level optional $62,500 claimer. The question handicappers should ponder is whether or not she will be able to get up in time in the 1 1/16-mile turf route, which doesn’t contain much speed.

Benoit & Associates
California Flag will be trained up to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Friday’s Eddie D Stakes, honoring Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, will have a full field, but there is one notable absence.

California Flag, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, is not ready for a start this week and will be trained up to the BC Turf Sprint on Nov. 3, trainer Brian Koriner said.

An 8-year-old, California Flag has made one start this year, winning the San Simeon Handicap on the hillside turf course in April.

The Eddie D field includes Shrug, winner of the Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar last month.

Arlington: Honey Chile can run away with feature

Barbara D. Livingston
If Thursday’s feature at Arlington plays out as it looks on paper, Honey Chile can steal off to a clear lead.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Forced into a pace duel in the Chicago Handicap on June 30 at Arlington, Honey Chile folded up and finished fourth. Among the horses sweeping past her was Maude S, who ran on to finish second. But Thursday’s featured third race, of which Honey Chile and Maude S are a part, might unfold much differently than the Chicago Handicap.

Eight fillies and mares were entered in a 6 1/2-furlong Polytrack sprint with multiple high-end allowance conditions and a $100,000 claiming option. Honey Chile looks like the only one of them with true early speed.

Jockey Club Gold Cup: Ron the Greek seeks to join elite pair

Barbara D. Livingston
Ron the Greek, with exercise rider Rodolphe Brisset up, will be targeting his third Grade 1 of 2012 in Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. – When Adam Wachtel and Nils Brous first met seven years ago, they were trying to buy a clothing company. While that deal didn’t materialize, the two have become a pretty good fit in the world of Thoroughbred racing.

Wachtel, 50, has had a lifelong involvement in racing, having been introduced to it by his father, Edward, a longtime breeder and owner in New York. Brous, 48, has long been a fan of the game and expected to one day get involved in ownership.
