Belmont: Mott looks for a winning Breeders' Cup prep from Royal Delta

Barbara D. Livingston
Royal Delta already secured her berth to the Breeders’ Cup by winning the Delaware Handicap in July.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Bill Mott has never won the Grade 1 Beldame Stakes, but the race has certainly served him well when it has come to the Breeders Cup.

Ajina (1997), Unrivaled Belle (2010), and Royal Delta (2011) all finished second in the Beldame before winning the Ladies’ Classic – called the Distaff when Ajina won it.

“I’d like to change that around a little bit one year,” Mott said Thursday morning at Belmont Park. “I’d love to try to win a Breeders’ Cup coming off a win in the Beldame rather than a second in the Beldame.”

Santa Anita: FrontRunner gives Capo Bastone, Gabriel Charles a second chance

Shigeki Kikkawa
Gabriel Charles will likely run in the Del Mar Futurity, while stablemate Dry Summer will be pointed toward the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Both Capo Bastone and Gabriel Charles had trained sensationally coming into the Del Mar Futurity earlier this month, but the way the race unfolded, with a moderate pace and a bunched field, neither ever got a fair chance to show his best. They were all revved up with no place to go.

On Saturday at Santa Anita, they return in the Grade 1, $250,000 FrontRunner Stakes, and a victory here would certainly erase the bad taste of Del Mar, for the FrontRunner offers a fees-paid berth to the Nov. 3 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile through the Win and You’re In program.

Santa Anita: Game On Dude formidable on favorite track in Awesome Again

Benoit & Associates
Game On Dude won the Goodwood (now Awesome Again) under Chantal Sutherland, but will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude has raced this year in Dubai, at Hollywood Park, and Del Mar, but it is at Santa Anita, where he began his 2012 campaign, that he shines best, which is why he will be the focal point of the Grade 1, $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday.

Finger Lakes: In Harm’s Way looms a threat in Breeders’ Futurity

Tom Cooley Photography
Tequila Hero’s victory in the Aspirant was the first win of his career.

The top five finishers from the $125,000 Aspirant three weeks ago, led by the 24-1 winner Tequila Hero, are back in quest of the richest purse of the season at Finger Lakes on Saturday. But it’s newcomer In Harm’s Way who looks like the most dangerous runner in a field of 11 New York-bred 2-year-olds for the $247,338 New York Breeders’ Futurity.

Santa Anita: Executiveprivilege gets distance test in Chandelier Stakes

Benoit & Associates
Executiveprivilege will try two turns for the first time in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The annual puzzle of how 2-year-old fillies will handle route distances has been foremost on trainer Bob Baffert’s mind when he thinks of Executiveprivilege.

Undefeated in four starts, including three sprint stakes, Executiveprivilege makes her first start around two turns in Saturday’s $250,000 Chandelier Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita. The race is a key prep for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies here Nov. 2.

Earlier this week, Baffert was confident that Executiveprivilege could handle the longest race of her career.

Ryan Haynes
Senor Rojo is looking to replicate his 2011 Speed to Spare Stakes win.

Senor Rojo will try and defend his title in the $100,000 Speed to Spare at Northlands Park on Saturday. The 1 3 /8-mile feature for 3-year-olds and up drew six horses, including Grade 3 Canadian Derby winner Toccetive, who has been installed as the 7-5 morning-line favorite.

Lone Star Park: Prince Valleyant must overcome rail in Dash for Cash Futurity

Prince Valleyant might have been the fastest qualifier for Saturday night’s $425,565 Dash for Cash Futurity for Quarter Horses, but it is the horse with the second-best time, One Handsome Man, who drew the better post for the Grade 1 finale at Lone Star Park.

One Handsome Man will break from the 10-hole in the Dash for Cash, while Prince Valleyant drew the rail. The 400-yard race is the first major stakes of the Quarter Horse meet at Lone Star, and it will share a card with the Grade 2, $174,000 Dash for Cash Derby.

Hastings: Dance the Wind should get proper setup in Sales Stakes

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Dance the Wind figures to be a short price when she runs in the $50,000 CTHS Sales Stakes at Hastings on Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies drew eight horses and goes as the sixth race. To be eligible to the race, horses had to have gone through a Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sale where the full commission was paid.

Woodbine notes: Attfield has another strong presence in Flaming Page

Michael Burns
Moment of Majesty is dropping in class after finishing seventh in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The Flaming Page has been dominated by trainer Roger Attfield, who has sent out four of the eight winners of the 1 1/2-mile overnight turf stakes for fillies and mares.

Even moving the Flaming Page to the main track could not stop Attfield, who sent out the 1-2-4 finishers in a field of five here last fall.

On Saturday, Attfield will be looking to add another chapter to his Flaming Page history when he sends out both Smart Penny and Janicellaine in search of their first stakes victory.

Delaware Park: Pletcher's fillies the ones to beat in Blue Hen Stakes

Tom Keyser
Kimono won her maiden by two lengths going seven furlongs at Saratoga.

Trainer Todd Pletcher definitely has a big shot at winning the Blue Hen Stakes on Saturday at Delaware Park for the fourth time since 2004. The debatable point is which of his uncoupled 2-year-old fillies, Danalake or Kimono, will wind up in the winner’s circle following the $75,000 stakes at a mile and 70 yards.

Danalake is the logical favorite after easily winning her two-turn debut in the one-mile Our Mims five weeks ago. Jose Caraballo, who is winning at a 48 percent clip aboard Pletcher-trained horses the past two seasons at Delaware, retains the mount.
