Charles Town: Distance a factor in all three stakes on card

Mike Montgomery
Downtown Allen will try 1 1/8 miles for the first time in Saturday night's My Sister Pearl Stakes.

The 5-year-old mare Down Town Allen and 3-year-old filly Rita Haywood, both coming off stakes wins on last month’s West Virginia Breeders’ Classic program, will test their stamina in Saturday night’s $50,000 My Sister Pearl Stakes at Charles Town.

The 1 1/8-mile My Sister Pearl, for West Virginia-breds, is part of a stakes tripleheader. The co-features are divisions of the Tri-State Futurity, one for fillies and the other for colts and geldings. Each division of the Futurity, which is open to West Virginia- and Maryland-breds drew eight 2-year-olds and will be worth $50,000.

Woodbine: Star Contender looks sharp for Coronation bid

Michael Burns
Star Contender won his last outing, the $250,000 Cup and Saucer Stakes, by 3 1/4 lengths.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Does anybody really want to win the $250,000 Coronation Futurity? Sure, the money’s good, but the nine-furlong route for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds hasn’t produced a high-class winner since A Bit O’Gold in 2003. And the last horse to capture the Coronation along the following year’s Queen’s Plate was Norcliffe in 1975-76.

Laurel Park: Amerigo Vespucci, Whiskey Romeo square off in Lewis Stakes

Amerigo Vespucci, unbeaten in two starts, may have to run much faster than he has so far in order to outperform impressive debut winner Whiskey Romeo in Saturday’s $125,000 James Lewis III Stakes for 2-year-olds at Laurel Park.

The locally based Amerigo Vespucci, trained by Tim Tullock, has essentially paired up his Beyer Speed Figures by coming from off the pace to win his career debut going six furlongs with a 65 Beyer and then coming back 2 1/2 weeks later to rally to a 2 1/4-length victory in a first-level optional $40,000 claimer at seven furlongs with a 67 Beyer.
