Luis Saez, shown aboard Mage prior to the Florida Derby, was injured when his mount suffered a fatal cardiac incident during the John's Call Stakes, crashed through the temporary rail on the outer turf course, flipped over the bushes, and landed on the inner turf course.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Jockey Luis Saez suffered a dislocated right collarbone and slight fracture of his left wrist as the result of a spill in which he was involved during the running of Wednesday’s $135,000 John’s Call Stakes at Saratoga, according to his agent Kiaran McLaughlin.

It was not immediately known how much time he will miss.

Saez had been booked to ride Kentucky Derby winner Mage in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes, but will definitely miss that assignment. Flavien Prat has been named as Saez's replacement aboard Mage.

Goodnight Olive makes her first start since her win in the Bed o' Roses in June at Belmont Park.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Eclipse Award winners Goodnight Olive and Echo Zulu, who finished first and second in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, will square off again in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Ballerina Handicap, among the highlights of the Travers Day undercard.

Echo Zulu, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2021, has won eight of 10 career starts. She comes in off a monster 7 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss Handicap here on July 26 for which she earned a career-best 112 Beyer Speed Figure.

Canterbury cancels due to excessive heat

Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., has canceled the race card scheduled for tonight due to higher than forecasted temperatures, the track said just hours before first post.

Canterbury had already pushed the first post for the eight-race card from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. because of an excessive heat forecast, but conditions worsened in the afternoon. The track said in a release that the new forecasts "could make racing dangerous to both horses and people that work outdoors.”

Exaulted won the Shoemaker Mile, earning him a birth into the Breeders' Cup Turf Mile, and will start in the Del Mar Mile for trainer Peter Eurton.

With 10 wins from 33 starters, trainer Peter Eurton is in the midst of his best Del Mar summer meeting, a level of success that was unexpected.

“No. Not at all,” he said on Wednesday. “No way.”

Through Wednesday, Eurton, 66, was tied for third in the standings with Peter Miller, trailing leader Phil D’Amato (15) and Bob Baffert (12). Eurton had won with 30.3 percent of his starters, second only to Baffert’s 33 percent from 36 starters among the 10 leading trainers.

Arrogate's dominant Travers leaves big shoes for Arcangelo to fill

Arrogate wins the 2016 Travers in a track-record 1:59.36, earning a 122 Beyer Speed Figure.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The presence of Arcangelo in Saturday’s 154th Travers Stakes at Saratoga elicits memories of his sire, Arrogate, and what he did in this same race seven years ago.

An unknown quantity to many before that day, Arrogate announced himself to the world as a rare talent with a record-setting, 13 1/2-length victory in Saratoga’s marquee event. He ran 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.36, the fastest time at that distance at this historic venue which began racing in 1863.

Antonucci thinks layoff will suit Arcangelo just fine in Travers

Arcangelo works at SAR Aug 16 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
Arcangelo will be making his first start since the Belmont in the Travers, having the skipped the traditional 1 1/8-mile preps for the race.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- When Forte ran in the Belmont Stakes off a 10-week layoff, it was hardly by design. The 2-year-old champion of 2022 was forced to miss the Kentucky Derby and Preakness due to a bruised foot, meaning the Belmont was his first start since the April 1 Florida Derby. He finished a game second.

When Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo runs in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga -- meeting Forte, Kentucky Derby Mage, Preakness winner National Treasure and three others -- he will do so off an 11-week layoff.
