INGLEWOOD, Calif. - In the span of a furlong on the first turn and backstretch of Saturday’s $200,000 Bayakoa Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park, Lady of Fifty’s position went from troubled to perfect.

Lady of Fifty was racing just behind the leaders approaching the backstretch when jockey Martin Garcia opted to take her off the pace.

Lady of Fifty steadied briefly before moving to the outside of the front rank of runners.

NEW ORLEANS – Heavy On Themister, short in stature but large in determination, fought off Watch My Smoke down the Fair Grounds stretch Saturday to win the Louisiana Champions Day Classic by a length.

“He’s a gutsy little sucker,” said Shawn David, who trains Heavy On Themister, a 4-year-old gelding by Lion Tamer, for owners Allen and Susan Savoie and T.J. Dickey.

ALBANY, Calif. – Zeewat the only stakes winner in the field of six 3-year-olds in Saturday’s $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, was pushed to the lead down the backstretch and pulled clear in the lane, scoring a decisive 3 1/4-length victory.

Coming off a third-place finish in the Golden Nugget and adding blinkers for his first start around two turns, Zeewat was just one-half length behind dueling leaders Londinium and Royal Barrister as the field reached the backstretch after a pedestrian 25.07 opening quarter in the one-mile race.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -  Dust and Diamonds earned back $60,000 of her $900,000 purchase price at last month’s Fasig-Tipton sale with a 2 3/4-length victory over Golden Mystery in Saturday’s Grade 3 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park.

The TwinSpires Players Pool had all three winning tickets sold on Saturday’s Pick six at Aqueduct. Each ticket was worth $86,496.

According to DeRosa, the Players Pool invested $21,704 into the wager. The three winning tickets totaled $259,488 not including any consolation tickets they may have had.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - As he is wont to do, San Pablo, the 2-5 favorite, put out only as much effort as needed to win Saturday’s $75,000 Queens County Stakes at gloomy Aqueduct.

After dueling with Gallant Fields for about a mile, San Pablo appeared to be pulling away from that rival - and Isn’t He Perfect - in mid-stretch.

Bob Baffert knew what he was doing when he selected Brigand to become the first horse he ever raced at Laurel Park.

Kentucky shipper Officer Alex changed tactics to upset 3-5 favorite Res Judicata in Saturday’s $76,500 Pennsylvania Nursery for 2-year-old statebred colts and geldings at Parx Racing.

Unlike his first two starts, when he dueled up front to easily win his career debut at Parx but stopped badly in his first try against winners at Churchill Downs, Officer Alex this time was taken slightly off the pace by jockey Stewart Elliott.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Action Andy continued his love affair with the Tampa Bay Downs main track on Saturday when he drew off after a half-mile and had little trouble holding sway late for a 2 1/4-length victory in the $60,000 Pelican Stakes.

Action Andy, under confident handling by Daniel Coa, contested the pace through a half-mile of 44.45 seconds, then shook off Black Belt into the stretch to open a 2 1/2-length lead a furlong out in the six-furlong race.

It wouldn’t be Gulfstream Park if trainer Nick Zito didn’t have at least one promising 2-year-old turning 3 to race here during the winter. Zito’s latest prospect is Mountain Eagle, a son of Birdstone who was an easy maiden winner going a mile making his second career start in Saturday’s second race.

Mountain Eagle is owned by Zito’s long-time client and friend Marylou Whitney.

“I am obviously happy for Marylou and John [Hendrickson],” Zito said after the race. “He looks like a nice horse.”
