Oaklawn notes: Database to bolster new veterinary inspection policy

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – As the Arkansas Racing Commission launches a prerace veterinary examination program Friday at Oaklawn Park, the track is rolling out a new injury database covering horses racing at the meet. The goal of both parties is to enhance the safety of racing at Oaklawn.

Bourbon Courage targets Donn Handicap

Bourbon Courage is being pointed to the Grade 1, $500,000 Donn Handicap on Feb. 9 at Gulfstream Park.

Bourbon Courage, winner of the Super Derby in September and most recently third behind Shackleford in the Clark Handicap in November, is a “very good possibility” to make his next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Donn Handicap on Feb. 9 at Gulfstream Park.

Trainer Kellyn Gorder had seriously considered Bourbon Courage for the $100,000 Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds, where the 4-year-old colt has been training in recent weeks. The Louisiana Handicap is set for next Saturday, Jan. 19.

Dutrow plans to fight suspension in federal court

Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. plans to ask a federal court to prevent the New York State Racing and Wagering Board from suspending his license for 10 years.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – In a last-ditch effort to save his training career, Richard Dutrow Jr. planned to seek intervention from a federal court Friday to prevent the New York State Racing and Wagering Board from suspending his license for 10 years.

“We’re going to go to federal court,” Dutrow said Wednesday morning.

Fair Grounds: Tiban looks to continue momentum in 2013

Tiban got pretty lucky to win a Claiming Crown race last month at Gulfstream Park – but that was fitting, since 2012 was a charmed year.

Tiban, now 6, had 9 wins, 5 seconds, and 1 third from 15 starts last year. Only three horses in North America had more wins with 10 apiece.

Santa Anita: Newcomer Mojica beginning to make impact in California jockey colony

Orlando Mojica, winning an allowance race on Cloudy Moon, is making some inroads since relocating last fall to Southern California.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The television images stayed in Orlando Mojica’s mind.

Mojica was in the Midwest last year, riding in Indiana and Kentucky, when he began closely following racing in Southern California.

“You see the mountains, the Breeders’ Cup, the good trainers, and the good horses,” he said. “I said, ‘I want to ride in California.’ ”

Hard Not to Like, a 4-year-old Hard Spun filly, was making her first start for Matz after beginning her career with trainer Gail Cox. She was ridden by Joe Rocco Jr.

Gulfstream Park Handicap the 2013 starting point for Fort Larned

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned will begin his 2013 campaign on March 9.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Fort Larned, an Eclipse Award finalist in two categories including for Horse of the Year, will launch his 2013 campaign in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap on March 9, trainer Ian Wilkes reported on Tuesday.

Fort Larned capped off his campaign with a game half-length decision over Mucho Macho Man in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He also won the Grade 1 Whitney earlier that summer at Saratoga. Fort Larned won his only local start here last season when he rallied from just off the pace to upset the Grade 3 Skip Away.
