From 13 runners on Saturday’s 12-race program at Santa Anita, trainer Phil D’Amato witnessed a gamut of results.

The stable won three races, led by Gold Phoenix’s upset in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile. Conclude, a 3-year-old colt, ran a quick time to win a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, and the former stakes runner Cash Equity won an optional claimer in which he was eligible to be claimed for $80,000.

Baker suspended 10 days for Flunixin positive

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Charlton Baker on Sunday was to begin serving a 10-day suspension for the finding of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Flunixin, also known as Banamine, in the post-race sample of Daufuskie Island who won the third race at Aqueduct on Oct. 7, 2022.

Flunixin is typically used for the short-term treatment of moderate pain and inflammation.

Baker, who waived his right of appeal, will be suspended through March 14. He was also fined $1,000.

National Treasure scratched from San Felipe with foot injury

National Treasure was the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the San Felipe.

ARCADIA, Calif. – An untimely foot issue will prevent National Treasure from starting in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, racing manager Tom Ryan confirmed Saturday morning.

National Treasure, third in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and third in his 2023 debut in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, was the 3-1 program favorite in the San Felipe. The race would have been his first start since moving from trainer Bob Baffert to Tim Yakteen.

“He’s going to come out,” Ryan said. “He’s a little tender on a quarter, and the horse comes first.”

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has issued a 15-day suspension to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after a horse he trains tested positive for a painkiller following a victory in the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes last September, according to a ruling on the commission’s website.

Former Los Alamitos trainer Elmer January dies at 97

Elmer January, who trained a stable of primarily Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos from the 1950s until 2020, died on March 1 at his ranch in Sanger, Calif., days after his 97th birthday.

January’s death was announced by Los Alamitos.

Santa Anita adds Thursday to next week's schedule

Santa Anita will race next Thursday as a makeup day for recent cancellations caused by rain. Santa Anita will race Thursday-Sunday next week.

The track will revert to a Friday through Sunday schedule from March 17 through April 9. There is no racing scheduled for April 14-16 to give the turf course, horses and human participants a rest.

Polanco might have yet another star from Argentina

The Argentine imports Blue Stripe and Irideo highlighted trainer Marcelo Polanco’s 2022 season, combining to win three stakes in Southern California.

Another high-class runner from South America is scheduled to join Polanco’s stable this spring. The 5-year-old horse Santo Dios is in light training in Ocala, Fla., and could start at Del Mar this summer, Polanco said.

Santo Dios races for Jose Cerillo’s Pozo de Luna, and was second in the Group 1 Anchorena Stakes at a mile on turf in Argentina in December in his final start in that country.

Kangaroo Court, a 14 1/4-length maiden winner, returns off long layoff

Kangaroo Court was one of trainer Tim Yakteen’s top 2-year-olds at Del Mar last summer before the gelding was sidelined with a minor injury.

The stable’s roster has changed considerably since then, so much so that Kangaroo Court will be overshadowed on Saturday at Santa Anita when he has his 3-year-old debut in a six-furlong allowance race for California-breds at Santa Anita.

Later on the program, Yakteen has five of the 11 runners in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, a prep for the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 8.

Vets order scratch of Scarlet Fusion from Santa Anita Handicap

ARCADIA, Calif. – California state veterinarians ordered Midwest shipper Scarlet Fusion scratched from Saturday’s Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap after they were unsatisfied with a pre-race inspection Friday at Santa Anita.

Trainer Joe Sharp confirmed the scratch. 

“The state vets took him out [Friday]. They weren’t happy with the way he jogged. My personal vet was happy with the horse, and we were happy with the horse, but they had some concerns so they opted to take him out.”
