Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity goes to Matabari

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Five weeks after she got loose in the barn area and suffered a severe tongue injury that required many stitches, Matabari won California’s richest Quarter Horse race in Sunday’s $2,024,075 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez, Matabari ($18.60) finished a nose in front of The August Heat, who was a nose in front of 2-1 favorite Freedom Choice in the field of 10. Matabari ran 400 yards in 19.68 seconds, earning $850,196 for owners Balgo Racing Team and Maryln Gonzalez.

Turf Paradise cancels Monday card

Turf Paradise canceled its live race program Monday due to poor track conditions. Heavy rains pelted the Phoenix area in recent days. Racing is expected to resume Tuesday.

Hollywood Park: Weewinnin pays $122 for stunning win in King Glorious

Making his first start since August, Weewinnin, ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., scores by a half-length in the King Glorious for 2-year-olds on closing day at Betfair Hollywood Park.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Horse owner Jeremy Peskoff was on the phone to his mother a few minutes after Weewinnin pulled a shocking upset in Sunday’s $200,000 King Glorious Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park.

“We won a $200,000 race,” Peskoff said. “And he paid $122.”

There was no reason to wait to share the news.

Sunland: Back Seat Roll stretches win streak to four by taking Enchantress

Back Seat Roll racked up her fourth consecutive win Sunday at Sunland Park, when she conquered two turns in the $85,000 Enchantress. She won by 3 1/2 lengths over Desertsmagic. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to Dandy Devona R F.

Back Seat Roll ($3) stalked the pace in third in the one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico, as Cat Meditation set fractions of 23.16 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.64 for the first half-mile. Back Seat Roll advanced through six furlongs in 1:14.19, then drove clear to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:40.95.

Woodbine: Heathcote's Valedictory romp brings down curtain on 2012 meet

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Heathcote led virtually all the way in a blow-out score Sunday in the 60th running of the $177,700 Valedictory Stakes, the closing-day feature of the Woodbine meet. 

Heathcote set moderate fractions in the 1 ¾-mile marathon, while being hounded at times by Quaesitor. He opened up a clear lead heading into the far turn for the second time, and then coasted home on top by 12 ¼ lengths, in 2:59.42.

Hollywood Park: Carrero suspended for striking agent with whip

Jockey Victor Carrero has been suspended for 30 days by Hollywood Park stewards Scott Chaney, Kim Sawyer, and Tom Ward after striking a jockey’s agent with a whip in an incident in the barn area in late November.

The incident stemmed from a dispute that Carrero had with agent Derek Lawson about a potential mount.

Hollywood Park: Dubai World Cup card first 2013 major objective for Grandeur

The Sheema Classic is the most likely March 30 target for Hollywood Gold Cup winner Grandeur.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Grandeur, the winner of the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup on Saturday, will leave California for England in coming weeks after his first international trip this fall.

It will not be his last road trip in the near future.

Owner Yvonne Jacques said trainer Jeremy Noseda plans to have Grandeur back on an airplane in early 2013. Following Saturday’s race at Betfair Hollywood Park, Jacques said that Grandeur will be pointed for a race on Dubai World Cup day at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates on March 30.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -   Csaba proved he was more than just a Calder horse for the course when he rallied to a convincing 3 3/4-length victory over Delegation in Sunday’s $100,000 Harlan’s Holiday at Gulfstream Park.

Csaba, who had registered each of his six previous wins over his home base at Calder, benefitted from a perfectly judged ride by jockey Luis Saez. Rating off a rapid early pace set by I’m Steppin It Up, Csaba slipped inside the leader to take command midway on the second turn, edged clear in early stretch, and gradually extended his advantage to the wire.

Los Alamitos: Old-timer Rylees Boy overtakes filly in Champion of Champions

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif.- Rylees Boy became the oldest winner of the $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos, winning Saturday’s race by a head over the 3-year-old filly Flame N Flash.

Rylees Boy gave trainer Paul Jones, 47, a sixth career win in the Champion of Champions, the nation’s top race for older Quarter Horses.

The late Blane Schvaneveldt is the all-time leader with 10 wins in the Champion of Champions.

Hollywood Park: Eblouissante able to resume training following minor injury

The 3-year-old filly Eblouissante, a half-sister to Zenyatta, will make her first start going 1 1/16 miles in a maiden race Friday at Hollywood Park.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Eblouissante, the 3-year-old half-sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, resumed training on Sunday morning at Betfair Hollywood Park, a day after being scratched from an optional claimer after sustaining a minor injury in the backstretch receiving barn.

Eblouissante sustained an injury to her hip when she struck a stall door about 30 minutes before a scheduled start in Saturday’s fourth race.
