Santa Anita: O'Neill hoping turf start will wake up Richard's Kid

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Doug O'Neill will switch Richard's Kid to turf for Saturday's San Marcos.

ARCADIA, Calif. – To revive the career of Richard’s Kid, trainer Doug O’Neill will try something next weekend with the 8-year-old multiple stakes winner that has not been done since the summer of 2009 – a start in a turf stakes.

Richard’s Kid is being pointed for Saturday’s $150,000 San Marcos Stakes over 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita in an attempt to reverse a four-race losing streak. The losses coincide with the time that Paul Boghossian, Dave Kenney, Dan Kramer, Steve Keh, and Mark Verge have owned Richard’s Kid, having purchased him privately last August.

Charles Town: Broad But Nice, 7, enters Tuesday feature in best form of career

Renee Ludwig
The 7-year-old mare Broad But Nice won five short sprints at Charles Town during a 10-race campaign in 2012.

At an age when most mares are finished racing, Broad But Nice is running faster than ever. After two easy wins that produced the two best Beyer Speed Figures of her 30-race career, Broad But Nice will step up substantially in class for the first start of her 7-year-old campaign in Tuesday night’s $30,000 feature at Charles Town.

The 4 1/2-furlong sprint is open to second-level allowance fillies and mares, nonwinners of four lifetime, and $25,000 claimers.

Parx: Nile Runner proving to be a profitable claim

Picking out a yearling at an auction – even with someone as sharp as Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito as an advisor – is something of a crapshoot. In the short time Richard Pell has been involved owning horses selected and trained by Zito, he has experienced the thrill of rolling a series of sevens that produced a nice profit on a modest investment and the frustration of spilling out snake eyes after risking big bucks.

One of Pell’s less successful buys is Nile Runner, who cost $100,000 as a yearling but won only 1 of 5 starts before he was claimed away for $7,500 last September.

Aqueuduct: Called to Serve works five furlongs for Big Cap

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Called to Serve is scheduled to ship to California on Feb. 5.

Called to Serve, preparing for a start in the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 2, worked five furlongs Friday morning in 1:00.69 over the Belmont training track.

The work, over a surface that yielded slow times all morning, was the fastest of 11 moves at the distance.

“I think the track was pretty dead,” said trainer Nick Canani, who timed Called to Serve’s final quarter in 24.20 seconds. “He worked great. We’re on schedule to leave on Feb. 5.”

Aqueduct notes: Clawback likely to wait for Gotham

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Clawback wins the Winkfield on Jan. 21. He will likely make his two-turn debut in the Gotham on March 2.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Clawback, sharp winner of the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes here on Jan. 21, will most likely make his first attempt around two turns in the Grade 3, $400,000 Gotham Stakes on March  2, trainer Rick Violette said Friday.

The Gotham is a two-turn race run at 1 1/16 miles over the inner track. It awards 85 qualifying points to the Kentucky Derby with 50 going to the winner.

“We’ll be nominated all over the place, including Oaklawn and Fair Grounds, but the most logical one right now is the Gotham to see if he wants to stretch out,” Violette said.

Santa Anita: Second City, Tale of a Champion get major class relief in starter handicaps

Four-Footed Fotos
Second City will make his next start in the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Breeders’ Cup races, or any other stakes for that matter, did not work out for Second City and Tale of a Champion in the final months of 2012.

For both horses, divisions of Sunday’s $40,000 Super Bowl Party Starter Handicap over a mile on turf at Santa Anita may be a welcome respite from graded stakes. The starter handicaps, divided, appropriately enough, into the Baltimore and San Francisco divisions, are restricted to horses that have started for a claiming price of $25,000 or less since Jan. 1, 2012.
